Caves and such

Post by GTG »

While pursuing your hobby of looking for the LDM or just plain exploring, has anyone found any caves of any size? Caves meaning naturally formed caves, not a mine or tunnel chipped out of the ground. We were in the Haunted Canyon area this past weekend and I found a couple of caves of a size that were worthy of exploring. One went back for about twenty to thirty feet. The other one we followed for around two hundred feet until we came to a spot that we needed ropes. Both showed very few signs of humans, the larger of the two had some grafitti towards the back. These were the first that I had seen that were of size to explore and I wondered what other's experiences were in and around the Superstition Wilderness Area.

Thanks,

Hi GTG, long time no see.

There's a couple of caves along the south face of Superstition Mountain, hidden in a little canyon. If you have the Goldfield map, look toward the bottom right, to the right of Heiroglyphic Canyon. Right where the word "Wilderness" in "wilderness area boundary" starts, a drainage goes between two buttes and into this canyon. During wet weather there's a waterfall at the end of the canyon.
There has been a big aluminum ladder in that canyon for the last 25 years or so. The first time I went there, the ladder was up against the cliff leading to the cave, and it looked like someone might be living there.
Last time I went (3 or 4 years ago), there was an old hemp rope coming down from the cave about 25 feet long that I had to climb. From the top of that, it was about another 10-15 foot climb to the main cave, but as I was alone I didn't do it. So I don't know how far in it or the less accessible one next to it go.
There's plenty of evidence of people coming and going - it's not a secret cave or anything. Take a rope and someone to spot for you if you go exploring.

Wiz, good to hear from you, long time no talk. Thanks for the information. We still haven't done any exploring together, maybe one day our paths will cross and we can share some discoveries. I'll have to check out that cave, I'm supposed to take a route up Heiroglyphic Canyon this winter, I'll look for the cave.
I hope to see you over on ArizonaHikers.com more often.

Thanks,
GTG
