crazy jake
I am looking for the 4 claims that jake had does anybody know where to start my search. Maybe ol crazy was not as crazy as some thought. I dont think they had anything to do with the LDM but just filling in some blanks thanks to anyone who may be able to help.
hound dog,
Jake spent alot of time searching (and blowing up) the area of Squaw Canyon and the southern end of Malapais Mtn. I do not know the exact locations of his claims, but I believe they are in that vicinity. Jake probably had what he considered good information from various people, but did not turn up any mine or cache that I know of.

crazy jake
There are some things about jake that interest me. 1. He was sent to prision for frad by a doctor who visited him while he was in prision. WHY would someone visit you if he had something to do with putting you there?
I would like to talk to some that knew him first hand. If any one can help or point me in the right direction let me know.
I have herd and read about his late night blasting and that he took the top of some hill in that area.
any help
thanks
sorry for any spelling mistakes.

Jake's Mountain
HD,
Welcome to the LDM Forum.
You have picked an interesting subject for your first topic.
Peter is correct as to Jake's area of "prime" interest. He also spent a good deal of time on Peter's Mesa.
What you are probably looking for is a small mountain or hill, that Jake called "little Malipi". Peter has pointed you in the right direction, and you should be able to find "Jake's Mountain" without great difficulty. It is not a "pristine" location.
Good luck.
Respectfully,
Joe Ribaudo

Jake was into a lot of things besides the Dutchman and his Dutchman scam. The Attorney General’s office file on their investigation into him uncovered his apparent involvement in white slavery/prostitution, child pornography and gun running to name only some of what they found. He has become a bit of a cult figure among some in the Dutchman community which is, in my opinion, a shame. Joe, you will like this, how did he end up on Peter’s Mesa and the Malapais area? The Stone Maps, or at least that is what he says in his manuscript (if you can believe that). Remember what Jake’s old packer says about him: Jake wouldn’t tell you the truth even if it made a better story.

Tom,
Actually, the Jacobs manuscript (and I am assuming here that you mean his FIRST manuscript which was relatively coherent and not the 800 page rambling tome he penned in prison) did not just use the Stone Maps to get him up to Squaw and Malapais. Jake took just about every map, clue and story he could name, from Apache Jack to Joe Deering, the "Palka" Map to the "Kidney-Shaped Pit" Map, the window rock clue to the shadow of Weavers Needle...(and many dozens more)and claimed they got him into the vicinity of the LDM.
While he searched most of Squaw Canyon, southern Malapais and Peters Mesa, his main area of concern consisted of a "Big Draw" not far from Squaw Cave....which I understand to be between the head of Squaw Canyon and a big cave on the southern tip of Malapais Mtn proper.
Was bored last nite and re-read the entire Crazy Jake Manuscript #1, so the info is fresh in my poor excuse for a mind.......lol.

I know someone that has the 800 page writings of jakes but which one would be the more truthful if their is such a thing? the 800 or 300?
How might one get a copy or see the 300 pager?
You all have been so helpful and I hope I might be able to repay.
thanks

How far east might be too far?

Houndog; I guess when you fall off the bluff. Bill
hound dog,
I am not sure which Crazy Jake manuscript you are referencing when you mention "the 300 page one". I know of two . One is about 800 pages. The other about 180 pages. Am not sure about the veracity of the 180 tome.
It has many anecdotes and theories in it pertaining to Jakes take on the LDM. It also has a good number of maps (some of them well-known) with Jakes interpretation of them thrown in.
The overriding theme in the manuscript is that Jake is close to finding the mine near a place he calls "the Big Draw" which is very near the head of Squaw Canyon. He interprets all the maps, stories, legends and anecdotes concerning the LDM as placing the mine there.
I wouldnt be surprised if the 180pg was used as a marketing tool to raise money from investors.
As for the 800pg account. I have only leafed through it. If I had to choose between the two for veracity, I would choose 180 (course, you have to remember who we are talking about here when taking about the "truth").

Big Draw
Peter,
"The overriding theme in the manuscript is that Jake is close to finding the mine near a place he calls "the Big Draw" which is very near the head of Squaw Canyon. He interprets all the maps, stories, legends and anecdotes concerning the LDM as placing the mine there."
As I recall (could be wrong) Jake places the LDM "in" the draw, not "near" it.
WOW! I almost feel slighted, since I only have 136 typed pages. They do have Jake's corrections, some written by hand, so that does make me feel a little better. I think I will stick with what I was gifted.
Aurum, Dr. Glover and Peter have "schooled" us on this subject in the past, and they have continued to add to our knowledge here.
I, for one, am very grateful.
Respectfully,
Joe

You are correct.
My copy contains 186 pages. Some stuff might be duped, but not 50 pages worth I dont think. I think the best part of the manuscript are the anecdotal accounts of his dealings with people like Bill Barkley and Chuck Aylor. As to his conclusions...who knows. Maybe he WAS right and missed it by 2 feet or so....lol

crazy jake, RIP
My thanks to all that have responded. It seems that Jake was an orginal. Not to be understood, I by no means agree with some of the outlandish thing jake did in the super. I just felt a bit facanated by some of the stories I have heard and read.
I am glad to know that after all these years the legond and stories are still sought after with so much interest, and devotion. It is sad that so many people have gone to there graves after spending so much time and effort looking for the LDM with only dreams and stories to be rememberd by. I only hope that in the years to come that those that still search for the end of the trail are remembered by so many of our peers.
I look forward in the days and years to come to read many more tails in these many pages. I know my spelling stinks and I am truley working on it. thanks again and if anyone has any outher tails of Crazy Jake please post them here.
My search continues:

Quote From Jake
"They say a man is only dead when he is no longer remembered, but to me these men will never die for I will never forget what they did for us."
These words were written by Crazy Jake in reference to Bill Barkley, Tom Daly, Chuch Aylor and Al Morrow.
Guess we can add his name to the list. Thanks for the continuing information. Still enjoying the read.

Jake
Tish,
Glad you are still looking in on the patients.
Jake had a way with words, and that's for sure. Nice sentiment.
There is no doubt that Jake has earned his place in LDM history. That legacy will survive forever, or close to it.
Hope life is treating you well, and we will hear from you more often.

hound dog,
It is my understanding that Jake used several camps on Peters Mesa, ranging from an area near the hairpin turn on the Charleyboy trail and then heading NNW towards the southern end of Malapais Mtn and the head of Squaw Canyon. The area is fairly remote, but can be reached from any of the trailheads in one day by a good strong hiker.
Good luck.

The Answer to a Good Question
Aurum,
Thanks for that little known, or at least unpublished, piece of Superstion Mountains history. I doubt there is another living person who witnessed that event, at least from the view that you had.
That was about as specific an answer that could be given to HDs questions.
I keep thinking I should ask you where the LDM is.
It would not surprise me to get an accurate answer.
Respectfully,
Joe

Thanks for the story about Jake. In all that I have read he was a true one of a kind. As I seek out information and tales of crazy jake some of the things he did were strange. But as we all search the Superstions for lost gold we learn more about ourselfes and the ones whos footsteps we follow in, we too become apart of the legend.
As I stood in the vast canyons, this past weekend, looking around and listing to the wind I could not help but feel the presents of those that have walked these trails before many of us even read our first book.
thanks again

I never met jake but I have talked to several people that knew him and that he had taken into the mountians in search of the unknow. One thing always comes to mind is that jake had found something but would never come out and say what it was.
Till my next trek into the supers I will remain a student of those who have walked before me, and of those in this forum.
