Mexican Mining in The Superstitions

While I was in Phoenix for the 2005 Lost Dutchman Rendezvous, I got to spend about an hour of quality discussion time with Ron Feldman at the OK Corral. He was gracious enough to give me a copy of the archaeological report that was prepared by the archaeologists that he was required to hire during h...

Ship Olbers Arrival in New Orleans - Not!

As noted above, I emailed the ISTG requesting info on any arrival of the Ship Olbers in late 1839. They finally came back saying that they had no record of such a landing but did have a suggestions of where I could go to look at microfilm copies of the immigrant ships' passenger lists - either the U...

2006 Rendezvous

Joe, I for one fully appreciated the work you did in organizing the 2005 LD Rendezvous - getting a location picked, serving the Friday evening stew which was to die for, and serving the special biscut and gravy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning. Your wife had a big hand in all of this too. I ...

Jose Ballesteros and the Peraltas

John D. Mitchel wrote in "Lost Mines of the Great Southwest" (1933) the following on Page 122 regarding Senor Jose Ballesteros and the Peraltas: "Ballesteros and his men met Don Antonio Pablo Peralta, the father of Miguel, who was on his way to California. Don Antonio told Ballesteros...

Robert Bowen's Search for the Two Soilders Mine

Novice, The June 27, 1893, article in the Arizona Daily Star had no additional info on Bowen and his search for the Two Soilders mine. If you want to get a consolidated collection of early newspaper articles on the LDM, the Superstition Mtn Historical Society published a set of them entitled "E...

Chuning's Search Begins

Novice, A little slow in getting back on your question regarding my source for when Chuning began to search for Deering's mine. Thomas Glover writes on Page 94 of his book, The LDM of Jacob Waltz, the following: "John Chuning finished telling Jim Bark his story and said that he thought he would...

Bowen's Search Pre-dates Chunning Search

There is a somewhat lengthy article in the Arizona Daily Star dated June 27, 1893, which includes the following: "Robert Bowen, of Tempe, one of the pioneer miners in Arizona, having been at the Silver King in early days, says he spent three months, thirteen years ago, looking for the treasure ...

Prospectors of the 1880's

The men who prospected the desert areas of Arizona, Nevada, and California in the late 1800's were a hardy breed. A hot Arizona summer did not deter them at all from spending months in the interior of the Superstition Mtns. Here are a few newspaper articles of the time that show their activities: Ph...

Oblers Passenger Records for 1839

The ISTG web site has a large number of passenger lists for ships arriving from Europe to a number of American ports. The below page of their site is sorted down to just German departures: http://immigrantships.net/bremenproj/bremenproject.html I have searched all of the ship manifests for the 1820'...

Spanish Mining Laws

Bill, As I indicated, I haven't read the whole document, but have read the total table of contents and done a number of key word searches. The only thing in the book on marking the mine locations reads a lot like U.S. laws regarding the size of the claim that can be made, where the claim markers hav...

Spanish Mining Laws

We had discussed the topic of Spanish mining laws and regulations several times on the Forum. I have come across an on-line book that might be of interest to members that has the following description: • Author: Halleck, H. W. (Henry Wager), 1815-1872. • Title: A collection of mining laws of Spain a...

Chuning's Search

I agree that Brownie Holmes claimed to have no association with the LDM manuscript that carries his name. Did he really not write it or did he write it possibly to attract investors and didn't want it public as it contained too many specifics? We will never know. The Brownie of the LDM manuscript st...

Chuning's Initial Search Area

The one person that had some first hand information on where the LDM was located was John Chuning. He had obtained sufficient information from Deering to be able to narrow his search area down to something reasonable (even though he widened his search area over the years due to his lack of success)....

Deering's Trail

I gave in my posting above the following Bark Note reference: 1. "Well, I was camped at at a spring in a big canyon, and was headed for the King. I had my breakfast, took my canteen full of water and went to look for my burro. I saw him about half a mile up the side of the mountain, about a mil...
