Reconstruction of Thread

Hello All: I’ve decided to go ahead and reconstruct the Location of Julia Thomas Business 1891 thread here, similar to what Novice (Garry) did for the “Frank Alkire and the Alkire Family in Arizona Territory” thread. The reconstruction is based on what Garry had saved and passed along to me (Thanks,...

Kitchen Layout

Hello All:

I kind of got ahead of myself regarding the size of Julia's kitchen. As shown on the 1890 Sanborn map, the size of the kitchen was actually only about 11 feet wide by 15.7 feet deep.

Sorry for the mix-up.

Location of Julia Thomas Business 1891

There are two basic versions of the story concerning the location of Jacob Waltz’s death. Early accounts, documented by Jim Bark and Sims Ely, stated that Waltz had spent the last months of his life at the home of Julia Thomas, and that he eventually died there. Bark and Ely based their accounts on ...

Erwin in Arizona Again?

Hello Joe: I have wondered if Erwin ever made it back to Arizona. Jim Bark stated in his notes that Erwin did come back to the Superstitions, sometime after Adolph’s remains and personal effects had been returned to the family in Washington. However, there is another line of thought that this wasn’t...

Cubfan: I know of nothing conclusive to say that Erwin Ruth and Bill Barkley had any dealings concerning the LDM. On the other hand, I also know of no such dealings between Bill Barkley and Bark/Ely. Sims’ letter could be taken either way and I’ll continue to give both possibilities some more though...

Ely Letters

Hello All: There is so much information in the Ely’s letters to Erwin, the topic probably deserves it’s own thread. For now I’ll post an initial couple of thoughts here. I found the stipulations that Sims made to Erwin really interesting, especially the first one: “You to join me at Phoenix, at your...

In Search of Video

Hello All: A couple of posts back, Joe mentioned blue and white stones used by the Apache. One version about their use of such stones (as it relates to the Apache cave of gold/Lost Dutchman Mine) can be seen at the link at the end of this post. This is a video of the old “In Search of...” sereis nar...

Hi peters canyon:

PC, Both float and in-place gold deposits have been found in the western Superstitions since Jacob Waltz died. Most of the stories about float I put aside because ...(well, you know). However, there are some stories about float that seem to be credible. I think the only chance of making similar find...

Keeping up with Jones

Hello:

So has anybody formed an opinion on what Jones was up to? Do you feel he was looking out for the Ruth family or coming at Erwin from another angle?

Erwin's 13 April 1936 Letter

Cubfan and Joe: Thanks for the replies. The entire paragraph in which the word appears seems to run together several different thoughts, and that makes it confusing enough. I was hoping that by figuring out what the word was, it would make sense out of the rest of the paragraph, but I hadn’t been ab...

Erwin's Letter of 13 April 1936

Hello All:

Just a quick question about a word I can't make out in Erwin's letter to Jones dated 13 April 1936.

Page 2 of the letter, seventh line, third word. Any help is appreciated.

One Piece of a Bigger Puzzle

I don’t want to derail the thread, but would like to say that Cubfan is right about what I was discussing in this topic, namely what Erwin’s story was regarding the map(s), how that story evolved over time, and how it fits into the truth surrounding Adolph Ruth’s fate. I wasn’t trying to say that by...

It’s unfortunate that Jones didn’t maintain a dialogue with Erwin. It may have been that he sensed Erwin was going to be of little help in his investigation. It may also be that the misplaced letter caused Jones to believe that Erwin had dropped out of the conversation. Whatever the case, Erwin now ...

The Spanish Map

One of the things that has always bugged me about the Adolph Ruth story is Erwin’s inconsistency regarding the maps. That inconsistency goes all the way back to the initial search for his father and his 1931 manuscript. It then continues throughout his dealings with the media, Jones, Reed, Magill, W...

Jones' Investigation

It’s curious Erwin did not follow up with Jones on his theory in the case. Granted, it was four years after his father’s remains had been returned, but as far as we know, the Phoenix City police were the only authorities pursuing an active investigation (even though it was not directly trying to sol...

It appears that Dr Hrdlicka’s final report was the one sent to Maricopa County. The disposition of the report doesn’t make senses to me but then neither do other things. Erwin's Response to Jones

Hello All: Although it is not positive proof that Maricopa County received it, Erwin states that Dr Hrdlicka’s report (original affidavit) was sent to the county attorney (“Dogie Andrews”) on January 21, 1932. This is over three weeks before Adolph’s death certificate was signed by Dr John Mauldin. ...

Hello Jim: I didn't dig very deep into the history of gambling. This is a quote from one of the sites I looked into (Stae Library of California) Scandals and the rise of Victorian morality led to the end of legal gambling. By 1910, virtually all forms of gambling were prohibited in the U.S. The only...

The Trend

If Jones was working vice, it could explain a lot of things (i.e., the “trend” he referred to, the professional gamblers, his implication that genuine Peralta maps are a pipe dream and a possible vehicle for fraud, etc.). So what was the “trend” Jones referred to? Basically the entire first page of ...

Jones appears to be a pretty good writer. He gathers his thoughts well and groups information logically to make his point (even if he is not direct). Hello All: I dead-ended on Ochoa too. There's just not alot on the web about it. It was also mentioned that it may have been named after an Oc...
