Re: Rendezvous

Garry, I was never in the military. So I cannot speak from experience. My understanding from people who were in the military is the ranking officer on a joint operation or endeavor was the person in command – unless there were orders to the alternative. If I get a chance next week when I am in Phoen...

Rendezvous

I regret not being at the Rendezvous this year. But as some know my wife had an accident a few days before the Rendezvous. I needed to be here, with her. Below is the talk I was scheduled to give Saturday night. Thomas Good evening, Before I start I like to make a toast, an old English toast from th...

Re: The Legend

Opps! I wrote the post on my iPad while watching a 60 minutes piece on falconry in Mongolia where they use eagles. Something that has intrigued me for years. Obviously, I was not paying enough attention to the post. But, there was some really good footage of the eagles! Here is what I meant to post:...

Re: Another Dutchhunter

From what I can tell not all the posts to Another Dutch Hunter Passes Over made the transition. I was looking for what I wrote about Len Killen. But I did not find it.

Re: The Legend

Don, I agree about Barry Storm. I see Barry as the bridge between the 1930s flurry of interest, and 1950s. While several people made permanent camps in the Sups. in the '30s and there was considerable interest in the LDM, none of them really spread the interest past the 1930s and/or outside a small ...

The Legend

The question is: what was the genesis of the legend? From were was it birthed? Did it come from Julia? Or Julia and Rhinehart? Did Bicknell concoct the legend? Or did Bicknell simply gather information and publish lt? What about the Holmes account? Or did today's legend spring from Bark? Ely? Barry ...

Re: Early Salt River Valley

Gentlemen,

Thank you! I had it fixed in my head it came from a book. Didn't even look in my map collection. Opps, I did get a good review of Farish ... stumbled on some items I might not have.

Gentlemen,

I am hoping for some help in Identifying the source of the attached. I though it came from Farish, But, so far I have not found it in Farish.

If someone knows of the or a source for it I would be most grateful.

A PS:

Good catch on Blair and the Black Forest. I had forgot to check Blair. I opened my copy and there it was. My bad.

Well done...

Re: Black Forest

Gentleman, My take is as follows ... First, let’s consider Loveless’ report of Waltz the vineyardist. While we have accounts of Waltz and his farm, to my knowledge only Loveless has him as a vineyardist. That Waltz, among others, may have grown some grapes, may be true. But outside of Loveless I kno...

Re: Adolph’s Ruth’s Directions to the LDM

Don, I can't say I totally disagree. My take is that if it is in Ely's book it is about 50/50 as to whether it happened. The physical author was the editor -- he worked from Ely's manuscript and other material the Ely's had given him -- and some of that material may have come from other sources. In ...

Re: Adolph’s Ruth’s Directions to the LDM

cuzzinjack, I share your conclusion. For me it is like falling dominos. For without Bicknell would we have Ruth? Without Ruth would we have had Barry Storm and Thunder God's Gold ? No Thunder God's Gold there would never have been the move Lust for Gold . Given the difficulty the Ely had finding a p...

Re: Black Forest

First I thank you for your efforts. Garry and Jim I first want to retract what I have written before on the origin of Waltz. Helen and I got our information from the same source. A once trusted source. From what I understand from this tread is that the Black Forest story originated with Helen ... we...

Re: Black Forest

Gentelmen, I asked the question as I did not know if the Black Forest idea was an old one, or not. An old idea that simply did not surface publicly until Helen’s book. If an old idea it met one thing, if not it met another. I had not recalled it as part of the legend from my earliest days of learnin...

Black Forest

Waltz ahs been connected to having come from the Black Forest, or Black Forest region.

I have tried a little to track down this idea/belief/...

Does anyone have info. on where this idea originated?

Thank you,

Re: The Legend of the Superstition Mountains

Adolph Ruth Adolph Ruth keeps popping up. Sometimes it is his route, or his health, or was he murdered, or did he die of natural causes, or his map(s), etc. The Ruth affair is a tantalizing one. However, one should keep in mind is that he knew very little about the Lost Dutchman Mine or any mine in ...

Re: The Legend of the Superstition Mountains

Re: The Legend of the Superstition Mountains

Not trying to beat the “Hrdlicka horse” to death, just a few possibly relevant comments. First, I am trying to get the weather data for the Phoenix area for the week of Ruth’s arrival in the Superstitions. Statistically June is one of the four hottest months in Central Arizona. Second, a possible ex...

Ales Hrdlicka

To all: Since Hrdlicka's findings re: the skull of Adolph Ruth seem to have interest I thought that perhaps a tread devoted to that topic might be appropriate. With the input from Jim and Garry I have been able to dig a little deeper into the question of Hrdlicka’s qualifications as a forensic scien...

Re: The Legend of the Superstition Mountains

RE: Hrdlicka, I have been going over Hrdlicka’s conclusions re: Ruth with a couple of colleagues. I am becoming increasingly skeptical of Hrdlicka’s qualifications in forensic medicine or anthropology. My reasons are: i) The index to Hrdlicka’s papers does not indicate someone who had a great deal o...

Re: The Legend of the Superstition Mountains

Garry, I agree. i.e., “we are complicating the story well beyond any reality and it will turn out to be all rather mundane and simple “ First RE: the “silver” plate inRuth’s leg. When I get the time I will dig into my files. That may be useful, it may not. Silver in metal inserts is often used as it...
