Julia Thomas' First LDM Search

Joe, in answer to your question, have to go back again to the Superstition Mtn Journal Volume 2/Volume 3 (July 1982) with Milton Rose's 2nd article in that issue titled " The Story of the First and Second Hunts for the Mine of Jacob Waltz. I quote: "The Arizonba Weekly Gazette, September 1...

Jacob Waltz's Deathbed Confessions

Again, some quotes from Milton Rose's article, "The Last Days of Jacob Waltz" (pages 5-6), in the Superstition Mountain Journal Volume 2/Number 3: "I talked to the three men (David Schoulters, Charles Roberts, and Simon P. Carr - my add) and they told me that they had attended Jake fr...

Jacob Waltz's Gold Types

The four types of gold is what Leland Lovelace wrote in her book. I am with your on this point - I would have thought there should have been only 3 types of gold ore and/or placer - not four. Regarding Waltz's travel into the Superstitions - I'm afraid that Dutch Hunters fall into one of two camps -...

The Three Mines of Jacob Waltz

Leland Lovelace wrote the book, "Lost Mines & Hidden Treasures", and in it describes Waltz's mines. On pages 134 - 135 she said that Jake claimed to have three mines: 1. The Quartz Mine 2. Placer Mine nearby the Quartz Mine 3. Number Two Mine - near Goldfield. Her research indicted tha...

Jacob Waltz's Arrival In the U.S.

In his book, "True Story of Jacob Walzer and his Famous Hidden Gold Mine", Frederick Highham states that Jacob arrived in the U.S. via New York in 1862. Besides not having Jake's last name spelled right, he was probably not correct on the arrival facts also. Jacob Waltz applied for citizen...

Ship Oblers

Novice (don't accept that you are a novice at LDM history): No, I have not seen the actual Oblers manifest that Helen Corbin has in her book. I would think that some of the Forum members that live in Phoenix would be able to contact her and see if she can provide more detail on how she came by the O...

John Phipps History

Joe is correct on John Phipps mother's last name being Canan and not "Canvan". I fat fingered that spelling but had it correct in my notes. Thanks for the catch. I found the Phipps family history on the LDS Geneology website by entering John Phipps with about 200 hits. Then had to sort thr...

Phipps Info

Sluicebox, I suggest you either email the Superstition Mtn Museum at Info@superstitionmountainmuseum.org or call them at 480-983-4888 to see how to obtain back copies of the SMHS journal. They used to sell them before they moved to the new museum site so they are probably still available. Additional...

Forum Bickering

I have been on this forum for enough years to offer my opinon on the recent posting content. There has been a large number of posting that are overt or veiled verbal abuse and attacks of certain forum members by others. I for one am tired of having to read through all of this to get to some real LDM...

Superstition Water Sources

The Superstitions were a lot wetter in the late 1800's with a number of streams flowing year round due to higher rainfalls then. Also, the 1880's earthquake dried up a lot of springs that used to be permanenet. The clue that Waltz's mine was "several miles" from their camp where there was ...

Hidden Waterfall

I may be mistaken, but I think to get around the Tortilla Creek waterfall, one would have to do it on the North side of the creek which the Soldiers probably would not have wanted to do as they were trying to get to the South and the Silver King. If the Peters Canyon waterfall is the one in question...

Borrego 13 - Ruth's Letter and Map

Care to share the LDM clues in Ruth's letter minus the "can of bees" items?

Also, do you know where the map pertains to if not the Borrego?

I did enjoy reading your manuscript very much and it certainly was worth the price.

Hidden Waterfall

The "Hidden Waterfall" is probably the one contained in the Two Soldiers story where they mustered out of the Army at Ft. McDowell probably in the 1880's and travelled by foot from there to the Silver King. The entered the Supers from the North side and encountered a waterfall they couldn'...

Dutchman Time Travel

For a 24 Hr. Time Travel, I would go back to a day around 1868 and spend it with Jake Waltz as he visited his hard rock mine and his placer mine in the Supers. I have three old maps that show a wagon trail through the area of discussion: 1. I believe I found this old map in 1992 in the basement of the old Capitol Building in its historical map section, but could be wrong as I did not reference it. It shows the Pima Villages and Camp McDowell, but not Phoen...

The Catholic Church, St. Francis of Paula, in Tularosa, New Mexico, has a record of a Merejildo Grijalba marrying Francisca Provencio on March 4, 1879.
