Emails and Graphics

I do not know if the following is 100% correct or if it is just that I may not be keeping up with the latest email technology. With today's email programs you can imbed graphics in the emails, be it of a map, a letter, a book page, whatever. But, I would not recommend it. Instead, send it as an atta...

Once up on a time in the west (true story), there were these two Dutch Hunters who went deep in the mountains. They horse-packed in. The panyards were dropped and the wrangler turned around and headed back. Upon unpacking one of them realized that he had left most of his food behind. These two had p...

This story sounds suspiciously similar to ones told about the Victorio Peak Treasure. Perhaps with a reference we could track it down.

Military Maps

In my book I have a military map of the Western Superstitions showing trails through those mountains. The original of the map dates from around 1866/’67. The date is based on the assessment of Connie Alsthuler. The map is one of two, and the two are both part of a set of 11 I obtained from the Natio...

Joe, When thinking about Mitchell I always ignore the 1953 book. My understanding from talking with John D’s son was that the first book came about slowly based on years of research and searching and knocking about the deserts. As I understand it there was never any intention of Mitchell to publish ...

Re-reading SC’s original posting raises another thought or two. If Mitchell was correct that Julia found a trench on the site of what became the Black Queen then to get into the Superstitions would she not cross what today we call the Goldfield area? Now if I remember correctly the earliest newspape...

One is reminded of a saying I have seen posted in a classroom: "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig." Enough education philosophy. My basic take on the Thomas/Petrash material is that most of what we have general access to came from Ely/Bark. Bark's man...

Wiz,

For what it is worth, two men who are/were recognized as serious, respected Dutch Hunters (such as Al Reser) who considered the Ortiz Map to be genuine and who believe(d) that it was to a small area both put that small area on different mountains.

Wiz, I am not “a map person”. Now Al Reser was. He could draw out information that I and I believe most others would miss. My partner Len is similar, one of the best men I have ever seen with a topo and very, very good at analyzing treasure maps. I have had some success but nothing like these two. A...

A passing thought about the trench … From a number of sources (if memory serves) I have read/heard that Waltz and Weisser first found a placer then the lode mine. Some sources even say the same day. (This is from memory, and no I do not remember the sources, but at the time I discounted them. So did...

About the Mason family and the Two Soldiers gold. I have not been able to find any indication of the Mason family in New York. Wiz, Yes it is a disturbing bit of info. But, everyone knows (I am being sarcastic) that there was no Spanish or even pre-Anglo Mexican mining is this area – San Bernardino Mts. and the near by Mojave. The only people who believe in that are misguided treasure hunters and other know-nothing amatures...

Ron, good morning and well said. I do not disagree in substance. Your point about it being people like you/us who uncover history is (I believe) quite accurate. Not that the academic historians don’t. They do and without them I (and I believe all of us) would be lost. But, consider the “amateurs” li...

Gentlemen, I would like to add to Aurum’s comments, in only that he may have been too conservative. The stigma that has accrued to the Waltz story permeates to this day. Let me give a couple of examples, but first a bit of personal observation. The Waltz story is quite well known, and it happened in...

I wonder. Perhaps if one looks at the question from the other way around … Make the assumption that Rhinehart never confused any of his information, and that Bark told it all and told it accurately. Compare and contrast with: In Rhinehart's time in Phoenix/Arizona there was a legend about two German...

Illegal Excavation ?

A friend mentioned this weekend that they had seen a small news item in a newspaper in Superior something about four men being arrested for an illegal excavation in the western end of the Superstition Wilderness Area. He asked if I had heard anything about it. I hadn’t. He had no details. Fact or ur...
