I looked at the area on mapquest. As near as I can tell, there is a drugstore there. Maybe the J. Waltz Memorial Rite-Aide?

Waltz Homestead Today

Maybe not an important subject, but does anyone know what is at the place where the J. Waltz cabin/homestead used to be (just west of the airport)?

I was curious with all the development in Phoenix if its just been paved over. Anyone ever drive by there?

Map software

Saw some new mapping software that some of the map freaks might be interested in: See: http://www.delorme.com/professional/xmap/default.asp Or if I spelled the link wrong, try www.delorme.com and look for XMAP4.0 The software has multi-levels of maps, down to standard topos. You can also buy aerial ...

What about other factors that they might consider when choosing the route to take? The story as commonly told seems to imply that the soldiers were not necessary that familiar with the route between McDowell and the Silver King..."they followed the trail they were told was the correct one to ta...

Joe: Thanks for the additional info. As I said, my only source is the copy of the "Official Map of the Territory of Arizona, 1880". Hard to make out the details, but the roads are as you describe, and the Maryville/Whitlow crossing is almost straight south of the fort. So if you keep Mt Mc...

For those of us following this conversation who aren't as familiar with the places named, maybe someone could give a few more details? I assume the ferry crossing referred to is the one on the 1880 territorial map marked Marysville/Whiltlow's ferry. On present day topo maps, there is a Marysville al...

I usually read the web site every Tuesday when its updated, and print out the column if its intersting. I didn't print out part 1 though. Kollenborn Chronicles - Peters Mesa

Don't know if most people are reading the weekly "Kollenborn's Chronicles" column on the Apache Junction web site (ajnews.com). There's a new one each Tuesday on the website. There might be some interest in last week's and this weeks column, entitled "Trails Across Peter's Mesa" ...

A while back during this discussion of the stone map - are they real or fake, I posed a question about whether there were other examples of similar stone maps that used the same format and were used in the same time frames. At the time, someone replied that stone was used as a permanent way of docum...

I think these are the two stone crosses found in a shaft near Tortilla Mtn in the 70's? If so I asked about them a while back and someone posted a reply that gave the background story. It may be back in the archives.

If you believe the stories of one of the Apache bands covering up the mines, then the story of them caching the gold would make sense. If you were going to spend all that time covering the mines, would you really just leave the gold ore laying around? If for no other reason than completing the job o...

Was the last person to take ore from the mine area Joe Deering in 1885? John Reed in 1888? (if you put any credence in those tales) I do not know, of course. It does amaze that the LDM vanished off of the face of the earth since that time. There are stories about folks visiting the mine area later ...

In Glovers first book page 44, he shows a section of the 1880 territorial map. It shows the Sky Blue and Hidden Treasure in the Randolf District. Not enough detail is shown on the map to place them very accurately, just somewhere east of Weavers Needle and NW of the Silver King. In a Kollenborn arti...

As I re-read the thread in this posting, I find it interesting that we are all looking at the same drawing but interpret the view as being from different directions. I assumed that the answer as to what Glover and Corbin included in their books (and what they left out) is that they only got permission from the manuscript's owner to put certain excerpts in print. It would appear that the owner of the Edwards manuscript has loosened his restrictions on what he all...

You'd always like to be able to pinpoint the exact site on a map, if for no other reason than curiosities sake. While I don't have any good theories to suggest as to the owners of the saddle bags or why they were found at that location, there is another way of looking at the story. Would Haywood really give Kochera a map to the actual mine/cache location? It seems like Haywood figured that he was already in e...

One key to deciphering this is to figure out the alignment of the trails at the time of the story. The soldier story refers to it as the "proper one to take" to get to the Silver King; the key being where the trail seemed to swing northward away from the general direction of the King. Brow...

Stone Crosses

Does anyone know more details on the stone crosses found near Tortilla Mountain in 1977? The reference to this is in Tom Kollenborns chronology in the back of his book. He even gives two names: "in March of 1977 Ed Farr and Mike Bilfry discovered the Stone Crosses in a fifteen-foot shaft near T...

I see how the mine could have been covered up, but wouldn't the trail still be there? Even after much time, the vegetation would only grow back slowly. Don't know how much more you're willing to expound upon this, but as usual I have more questions. One of the things mentioned in the Bark Notes (as quoted in Helen Cobin's book) on this subject is something about an old hatchet picked up by a man named Wright. This seemed to have something to do with where Bark found the willow tree with the cross in it. He says that it was found on a trail that...
