Socialism, as a philosophy and indeed as a word, was first coined in 1825 to describe the ideology of industrialist Robert Owen. Owen used the term on the floor of a joint session of congress in 1825 when he announced the purchase a town situated along the Banks of the Wabash River in Indiana. The settlement was called New Harmony. I suggest you all visit that socialist institution known as a library and look it up. It would do you some good.

I'm not saying it is good or bad, but what I am saying that Socialism is as American as apple pie and baseball and that's just the facts.

critter,

"Historically speaking, where does Socialism come from?"

You did not ask where it first started in America. If you have an axe to grind, you need to be careful not to grind it into uselessness. If your point is to focus on America, you need to move away from your example and seek the answer in Native American cultures.

Historically speaking, I would vote for Sparta. If you want to go farther back than that, you need to study prehistoric man.

Sparta was an authoritarian aristocracy and prehistoric man lived in tribalist societies, neither of which resembles anything like Socialism. Indeed, Socialism requires industrialisation and therefore simply could not exist before the Industrial Revolution. The historical fact of the matter is that Socialism did not exist as a philosophy or a society until Owen started his community at New Harmony. That is the historical fact of the matter as portrayed in every history book that I've ever seen. I understand how this causes a great amount of confusion for your ignorant mind, but that's a condition I'm sure you're used to by now.

critter,

True to form, you have no idea what you are talking about. Your inner hatred for America shades any possibility of rational thought. You claim to live in New Zealand, but write things like this:

[Jim, once again you are confused. Social Security is not an "agreement" with the government. It is a form of social welfare called social insurance. It is there to ensure that our people don't starve, which is what they were doing during the Great Depression when the plan started. Yep, it's changed a lot over the years, but it is still social welfare.]

Could you be a little more specific as to what your sources are? "That is the historical fact of the matter as portrayed in every history book that I've ever seen." has little meaning, since we have no idea what history books you have read or "seen".....if any.

You could be right about when it first showed its ugly head in the United States, but I am doubtful that anything you say has one ounce of truth in it. I will conceed that you and Brad are the experts on Socialisim, Communisim and all the other failed systems of government that have enslaved and slaughtered millions of people across the planet. The bulk of those people were their own.

I, for one, appreciate your little "history lesson", but I much prefer to get those lessons from historians who start out loving this country, rather than hating it.

It's good that people like you are able to post on sites like this. It's important that Americans know their enemies. Keep up the good work........Comrade.

So what do you mean when you say "our people", Brad?

Ah yes, I always know I've won an argument with Joe when he resorts to insults and asserts that I'm Brad.

Well, first off, I encourage you to learn from an historian. In fact, I even encouraged you to use your local library if you need to verify anything I've stated. That's the place with all of the books in it, some of them, you'll find, are history books. Second, ALL citizens of the United State are required to pay taxes, including those living overseas. And if you still are so delusional that you think I'm Brad, then Here's a clue, LOOK AT MY IP ADDRESS! That's why I gave it to you. I'm not hiding anything, you're just confused. As for my love of America, well, I love ALL aspects of America. I love the fact that you can start a socialist commune in America or that you can essentially practice free-market capitalism. To me, America is a land of diversity and freedom, somehow you translate that as hatred. You obviously have a lot of hatred in you.

I really wonder if you ever get embarrassed about being so wrong all the time, but you just keep coming back for more, so bring it. I'll sort you out is short order, as always.
