You are correct about the grassy area you mention being one of Jake's former camps. That camp was used by several other people over the years and is a nice spot but is a little too open for some folks.
Jake moved up out of Squaw Canyon once to use that camp so he could keep a better eye on what was going on up on the Mesa and to generally harrass people using the nearby Peters trail. He abandoned the use of that camp when a fire took his tents and most of his camping equipment.
Jake's first camp in the area was at the bottom of Squaw Canyon near LaBarge. Later he moved up Squaw Canyon to a large flat area about 2/3 of the way up the canyon. That was his favorite camp and the one he kept for many years. He briefly had a small lookout camp atop Squaw Canyon but it was small and not to his liking. Jake didn't like to spend the night up on Peters Mesa.
