Longhorn Sighting

Post by P »

Just an interesting little story.

I have begun my mountain "training" for the upcoming season. Tramped up to the Fremont Saddle and eyeballed the Needle and tramped back down. On my way back as I approached the old turn off for the Barkley Ranch, I noticed a funny looking "horse" up ahead. Once in viewing distance I realized there were about a dozen head of longhorns lazily crossing the trailhead road, munching grass etc...Didnt pay me any mind.

I considered running one over (I have a big freezer)but as they were about the same size as my car, I passed on that impulse. For a second there I thought I was stuck in a time warp and expected the QCU cowboys to come riding up....but those cattle just eventually meandered out of site in my rear view mirror...........

Peter,

No telling who those Longhorns might belong to. Good thing you came to your senses. You could end up tied over one of your favorite anthills in the Superstitions.

Actually taking game out of season, or butchering cattle that don't belong to you, is a common problem with folks that migrate from back east. I don't know why that is, except for the possibility that they have read way too many "dime store novels" about the old west. This is poor country for throwing a wide loop, even if it doesn't envolve a rope. On the other hand, if you start breaking out any of that "New York Salsa" there could be a rope in your future.

You should have felt right at home.....Wall Street and all.

Respectfully,

Joe

Just wait until you wake up with a half-dozen of them shuffling around your camp...!

Or, as your dog wakes you from a sound sleep raising cane, your flashlight spots a pair of eyes five foot from the ground and six inches apart. That usually ends up with a pair of underwear in the fire after breakfast.

Joe

One of my goals in life is NOT to be tied over any anthills...

Wiz

One of them suckers makes it to one of my camps and I would be surprised....

Knun

Dont wear underwear, much to my camping partner(s) dismay. Tho they are use to my little foibles by now...i hope.

Post for Greg Davis

Post by S.C. »

I am posting this item for Greg Davis since he has not yet been able to
resolve the computer compatibility program problem with MSN.

"The grazing permit for running cattle from the wilderness boundary
around Peralta Trail Head to the first cattle gard belongs to Chuck Bacus of
the Quarter Circle U-Ranch. They graze ordinary run of the mill cattle.
The next section runs from the first cattle gard to the second cattle
gard running south. It belongs to the D-Spur Stables which was Don
Donnaly's old outfit. Now they graze Long Horn Cattle so those are
probable the ones you saw. Thanks to Jack Carlson for the information.
Cordially, Greg Davis"
