Stone Maps
If anyone would like high power pictures of the ones in Life magazine,
here is a link.
http://images.google.com/images?q=stone ... rce%3Alife
Good one of Chuck Aylor. Did he build the wall? Are is it an old one?
Several of Travis Marlowe.
If you go to full size on the horse map, then copy and paste in paint
and use 2x, you will see that there is not a word above the hole above
the horse's leg.
Go to the superstition link for more pictures and check out the indian
in head to toe feathers! He is leading eigth other men with three pack
animals. Dressing like that to go camping, he must know of two gold
mines. Both of which are richer than the other one.

maps in safe
The maps in the safe are all different from the maps in the magazine.
They are different from any that have been shown anywhere on the
net that I know of.

Excellent photos!
Thanks for posting the link to those - I hadn't seen them before.
As far as Chuck Aylor goes, I may be incorrect, but I thought at one point he and his wife had a stone house they had built to live in out there that was later torn down by the FS - looks like that may be what he's standing next to.

Here is another copy of the Horse Map with a slight amount of enhancement.

Bank Vault
Any thougths about the square top trail map? It doesn't seem
to have to have a stream that empties into the Salt river. And
the side with the dagger is missing.

Bill - thanks for the link with "Superstition" in it - that did the trick. Neat old photos indeed.
I'm not sure I follow your comment about the "square top trail map," especially the part about the dagger missing. The only photo I saw of the map that has the dagger is the one from the vault being held by the guy on the right, and if you look closely, they have a length of black tape running down across where the dagger should be.

More Horse.....
Bill,
I am able to blow up that picture 400% with my picture program. In truth, I don't need to blow it up at all to see "PEDRO". You can see the letters in the picture I posted above.
On the other hand, here is a picture of the map that the museum claims is the original. Judge for yourself if there is a difference.

The B in cobollo in the life photo is an 8. In the museum photo, the B
is a B. I can't see a word on the horse's rump in either. But I am blind
in one eye, so I could be wrong.
Cubfan thanks for telling me about the tape. The top of the photo is
so black that I did not see the tape. Also what is the bottom stone map
in this photo of?

Bill - unless I'm mistaken, I think the stone lying on the box by their feet with the chain near it is the horse/priest(witch) stone with the priest/witch side up. It's just hard to see with the shadows, but I'm pretty sure I can make out the priest on the left hand side.
Joe - there's an awful lot of things that look different between the 2 photos of the horse side of that stone. I'm sure some of it can be attributed to shadows and lighting, but I don't really see any way to convince myself that those are images of the same stone carving.

Aylor And The Stone Maps.....
Paul,
I don't disagree at all. Lighting could make all the difference in the world.
"As far as Chuck Aylor goes, I may be incorrect, but I thought at one point he and his wife had a stone house they had built to live in out there that was later torn down by the FS - looks like that may be what he's standing next to."
It is the Aylor house in La Barge Canyon, and the man in the picture is probably Chuck Aylor. Now why am I not surprised that he was involved in a story about the Stone Maps?
Take care,
Joe

Shadder writing
"Can you read shatter writing?" he asked abruptly.
"Not very well," I replied. We sat down off to one side.
He pulled a paper out of his pocket and unfolded it. It
contained a diagram of five rocks and a reproduction of
certain symbols found on each of the rocks.
"You can't see the figures on these rocks," he said,
"until they are in shadder, at a certain time of day."
J Frank Dobie Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver pages 248 -249
Here is a link to the clearest pictures that I have seen of the
horse priest stone that shows the shadow writing.
http://www.lost-dutchman.com/dutchman/t ... eGate1.htm
Note the 3 instead of an 8 down from the two crosses and next to the heart.
Which does the museum stone have?
Do you know about when your picture was taken Joe?

Stone Maps Photo's
Bill,
Your link is to a hand drawing of "The Gate". Is this what you were referencing for the Horse/Priest map?

The Gate Plus......
Roger,
I trust all is well with you and the family.
I have seen Bill's site before. As you scroll down, there is a good deal more than the hand drawing of the gate.
Bill,
I will look for the date those pictures were taken when I get home tonight.
Take care,
Joe

Stone Maps
Thanks Joe, Haven't been on that site page and forgot the scroll down thing. Interesting analysis by Bill.
I do think that the word "Pedro" can faintly be seen on the Life Magazine photo of the Horse picture. The infra red photo Kenworthy took clearly shows it, but what version of the stone he had under the camera is anyone's guess.

Call me crazy, but why doesn't someone make some nice copies of the Life magazine photos and we all agree on a time and just see what is on display and if there are differences bring it up then?
The way I saw it they were encouraging us to come on by and check it out. Would be interesting to hear an explanation and see the reaction.....
