Twin Buttes

I just started reading this thread recently. Just wondering if someone who has actually been there could give me some direction on where to find those scrapings at Twin Buttes. We hiked around the South end of the South butte, but didn't find anything. Anyone know where to look once you get there? R...

Giving Jake the boot

To:Any one who knows the answer.

Where does the information that Jake got "kicked off the mountain in the late 70s" come from. I'de like to read more about that theory.

4 types of gold

Roger, I've re-read your post several times, but I am still having a hard time squaring 4 types of gold with only three lost mines. Were you indicating that the Number Two Mine was a "known" location and that the remaining different types of gold were from two other mines? If so, would the...

Ron, I'm assuming that if the distance is farther than can be traveled in one day from Hidden Spring, then it could be ruled out whether there is gold in that location or not. My post was a question, not a statement. I don't know how far an old guy and mules could travel in that terrain. The distanc...

Iron Mt.

I just did a virtual hike on my computer ( in 3-d mode to account for elevation changes), and the trip from Hidden Spring at Cottonwood Canyon, to Iron Mt. is about 28 to 29 miles. This is if you go by way of the Apache Trail, over to Tortilla trailhead, then via the JF to Rodger"s Canyon trail...

lights

Joe, Interesting story about the lights. If someone is still frequenting the entrance to the Weaver's Needle at this location, they might consider its contents ( if any) as personal property. My first thought as I read the story was that it might be one of those indian ceremonies celebrated at a cer...

The 1

Joe, Well, at least that eliminates the North side for starters. I'm still working on basic Dutchman clues. I haven't gotten around to the Stone Maps yet. But, now that I know the general vicinity of a couple of clues, I might have to start some research before I take that hike. Regards, Sluicebox

Joe, Which side of Weaver's Needle would that be on? So far, I've only been to the South side. The photo I took from the bluff N/E of Freemont Saddle is now the background on my computer screen, and I don't see one on that side. I checked my air photos, but don't have an overlay for my map program t...

TGH, bill711, When I fisrt read this clue, my first thought was Circlestone, but Mound Mt. seemed too far east to make the trip in one day from Cottonwood creek. Dick Holmes seemed to be indicating Peters trail from Charlebois Spring to the head of Peters Canyon was the "military trail", s...

TGH, OK, thanks. At least I know I'm looking for a clue that no longer exists as it did when the Dutchman used it as a prominent landmark. Would I also be pushing the limits of forum disclosure if I asked whether or not you know if any of the possible clues in Walter Gessler's notes are still visibl...

TGH,

Thanks for your reply. In your post, you didn't mention if the round Indian ruin of rock used to be at the Peters Mesa saddle. I assumed that is what you meant as you did not indicate that is was elsewhere. Would that be a good assumption on my part?

X marks the spot

I was just looking at aireal photographs of Peters Mesa and ran across an interesting curiosity. There is a large dark X in the saddle between Black Mountain and Peters Mesa. I'm trying to decide if it might be an alien landing site, entrance to a tunnel from here to Mexico, a stash marker, or X mar...

Bill, I certainly agree with what you have said in your last post. It's especially true for a new comer to the game because there are no established relationships of trust to knowledgable people. In one of Aurums first posts on this subject he noted that his faith in the story came as much or more f...

Roger, thanks for the tip. I did find John W in my search of birth date ranges + or - 20 years. He was third in the list. Its interesting that 4 others in that list don't have death information. Joe, I agree that Aurum and Roger probably have found the piece of the puzzle that fits the cut out here,...

Joe, thanks for the website, I was going to ask where you were getting all the brother and sister info. I was looking for a John that would have been born around the 1828 date because that would fit with Brownie's memory of the conversation with Dick. Its kind of tuff to put a good jig saw puzzle to...

Sorry about the run on in that last post guys. Sincere apologies. I guess I'm just a little slow these days. I didn't realize that the 1876 date of death was a typo. I just visited the website that Roger posted and tried to find a John Phipps with that date of death and got no results. I also see th...

Aurum, as always, there is a lot of interesting information in your post. However, I am still a little perplexed about the existance of single John Phipps or Pipps that fits all of the information and stories. The essence of all of the Pipps tales is that he knew the location of the mine, but died B...

Joe, thanks for your reply. I was wondering if it was the same Pipps as in the Holmes Manuscript, but I didn't want to jump to that conclusion without checking it out further. Seems as though there are a lot of mis-spellings of names, or name changes associated with a lot of LDM personalities. The B...

Who is Phipps?

I've been going over the sources I have at hand trying to find out more about where John Chuning had his permanent camp. I checked the Berry Storm account of the two soldiers to see if he mentioned Chuning. He did not, but at the end of his chapter on the two soldiers, He mentions a miner by the nam...

Joe, I suspect that others can also see through the charade, but as Bill points out, they don't want a "role in this play." If a spade that you know or suspect is a spade wants to be called a club, why not just call it a club? The facts are still the facts. Speaking of "facts", I...
