Linesba

Joe, I am pulling this information from old newspaper articles. Location described in one as "one and a quarter miles east of Weaver's Needle". The mine "has four entrances in a small box canyon". In the other says that in 1940 "Marion Walker filed claims" and "W. ...

Re: Crossing The Topic......

There is a place in the Superstitions where the Two Soldier's story and the Joe Deering story can logically be placed. There is a pit mine there and many other signs to support the location. It has been worked out in modern-day times. There are credible stories that indicate that area as the locati...

Maybe

Maybe Ruth found the same as everyone else ... nothing. Maybe Barry Storm told the truth about what he found...just didn't understand it. Maybe all the stories started with Abe Reid...and he's still laughing! I think Ruth just died all by his lonesome...Tomorrow maybe I'll do a little prospecting......

Big Caves

A couple of old articles discuss big caverns in the Superstitions. Maybe one of these is what Kollenborn found: January 8, 1880 (The Ohio Democrat) – Mexican arrived from Reno Mountains. About one month ago a companion and he went prospecting about a month ago, going up Salt River. They left river w...

Top Falling Off

Murphy,

That's where I read it! If you can make a comparison it would be interesting. If it was a big fall it seems like it would show up in the local papers at the time.

Bonding

Khun, Thanks for that differentiation, but it has always appeared to me that once bonding occurred the money started flowing for the development of the mine, and some of that flowed to the claimant. Given the location, I think Bowen made a chunk of change on this claim. I'm trying to understand the ...

Miner's Needle

I read in one of the Dutchman books that a big chunk of the top of Miner's needle fell off in 1932. The claim then being that it was really Miner's needle rather than Weaver's needle that should have been the starting point for finding the mine.

Can anyone verify the change to Miner's needle?

Robert Bowen

Bowen did make some money off his gold strike: July 20, 1893 (AZ REP) - Superstition mine No. 1 owned by Truman, Jones, Bowen, abd two others, has been bonded at $35,000 by Hon. T. E. Farah of Vulture... Maybe the San Diego cattle ranch was family money: Janaury 6, 1897 (AZ REP) - Robert Bowen of Te...

Walter Upson

Murphy, Walter Upson was one of the many folks Barry Storm worked with prior to writing "Thunder Gods Gold". He was described as a mining engineer. The quotes for him came from a newspaper article in The Ohio Chronicle-Telegram May 5, 1940. He and Storm were given access to a newly discove...

Tunnels & Workings

TGH, You said: "Having seen first hand how the Mexican Mining families involved in the Superstitions dug their tunnels and shafts there is no doubt in my mind that the area the LDM resides is riddled with hidden tunnels and workings." What you are looking for sounds similar to what Walter ...

Caves & Cryptic Messages

The messages here seemed to go far afield of the original topic. Much of it went over my head...though I'll admit I finally had to do a few searches on El Dorado Canyon just to satisfy my curiosity. I didn't spot Deering but Queho was interesting. There are three caves that were written about years ...

Reopened

Zen,

Nice pictures! Did you ever find any of the guard houses?

You mentioned that you came across two areas that were opened after being filled. This is probably a dumb question...how did you tell they had once been filled?

Covering Mines

I've read the covered mines that have been found are filled with a cement like substance. McGill described his men having to use dynamite for weeks? months? to get through it. Doesn't seem like that would be done by either someone in a hurry or someone who ever intended (hoped) to come back.

It's nice to hear that at least something in the Holmes manuscript checks out! Do you know of anyone else that reported that story prior to Holmes?

Interesting Notes

A lot of interesting notes were made in this thread: "According to the Death Certificate (Arizona Birth and Death Records)of John Chuning, he died November 11, 1910 in Pinal County, Tortilla Flat and is buried in the Mesa Cemetery." Comment: For some reason I thought that there were storie...

Chunning Mine

Joe, Thanks for your reply. That is the quote I'm referring to. Your point that no one accepts that they have found the LDM if it turns out to be worked out is a good commentary on human nature. I agree that if what he found fit his Deering clues, that no one would know better than him. But for some...

John Chuning Finds LDM

In his book Thomas Glover reported that John Chuning once thought that he had found the LDM but later resumed his search elsewhere. In a post last year Joe Ribaudo posted the statement, "I believe John Chuning did find the location. Because it was worked out, he refused to believe it was the LD...

Joe, I am not questioning that these things were found. I'm questioning why they can't be found again. Is it all deliberate destruction? Is it that people are loathe to admit that someone else found a major clue? Are they so hard to find that everyone else is walking (climbing) right past them. Take...

Unanswered questions

To me the main unanswered question is why whenever significant clues seem to be found, no one else can verify that they really were found? Clues that couldn't easily go away: The rock that looks like a man. The cave with a house in it. The tunnel on the side of Bluff Spring Mtn. The cactus with the ...

Mr. Ribaudo, I have always found your posts to be interesting. However, I was confused by your post because it seems to say the cave of gold bars is outside the Wilderness boundry: "Perhaps the same can be said for the cave of gold bars. An old friend of your's may have been set up to find that...

Bluff Spring Mountain

Mr. Reynolds, It is always very interesting to hear of comments Mr. Magill made after publishing his book. I don't have his book handy but I recall he said he used a rope to get from the mine area down to the tunnel area, I believe he said it was about 200 feet down. I've always thought it strange t...
