In an earlier post it was stated "it is believed this story stems from accounts of several men from san carlos -----" No one knows for sure if Mrs. Conatser was refering to this account or not. Estee died a while back so we can't go back and ask her. When she was researching her book, Cona...

Conatser claimed that a "group of men" found a "king's ransom" in gold bars in the 1940s in a cave somewhere in the mountains. That members of this group returned every year to take additional gold out of the mountains. She stated that she knew this to be a fact.

On the ...

I've never seen a connection made between the Conaster and Kochera stories. Even in the in depth discussions about Kochera on this bulletin board.

Its an interesting to think about though. Anonymous, how did you make this connection? Does anyone else have comments about this?

Conatser's book doesn't go into any detail over who the men were who took the gold out of the mountains in the 40's. It's believed this story stems from accounts of several men from san carlos who went into the Superstitions in the 1940's and removed $50,000 worth of gold and silver from a hidden ca...

The newsletters are also not coming out quarterly, sometimes only twice a year, and there really isn't much in the way of news in them. If the SMHS doesn't start living up to it's part of the deal, I predict a drop in membership renewals.

I inquired about the journal last December and was told the staff had too much work to do and they were trying to edit and proofread the materials for printing. That was 6 months ago. I gathered the staff was busy with other things and the journal took the back burner. This doesn't present a good im...

Seems to me you folks need some sort of "editor-in -chief" person to be responsible for editing and putting together the journal. This can be a daunting task for someone doing this in their spare time, or who needs to handle a half-dozen or so other chores and still worry about the tedious...

I receive my newsletter at sporadic intervals. Last time I asked (several months ago) I was told they were doing final editing on the two late journal issues, and it was taking a long time due to the volume of material. So now they should be sending out 3 journals (2000, 2001, 2002).
I'm getting...

Many of us who look in on this site from time to time are members of the Superstition Mountain Historical Society (SMHS). Do what I always do: click my heels together 3 times, repeating "theres no place like home", then run around in a circle until you get sick. It won't get you home, but it will take your mind off of things.

My Friends, The Search Is Over !!!

Dear Fellow Explorers,

I have spent the last 15 years of my life in search of the lost dutchman's goldmine, and today, my search is over. I have found it ! It is more beautiful than I had ever expected. Nuggets the size of large rocks ! The glimmer from the gold is almost blinding ... It wi...

Yeah! What he said!

You really seem to know the particulars here, LDM. Any suggestions on how we can address this?
Everyone knows that backcountry courtesy dictates not camping so near a water source that the wildlife can't get to it. But I never heard of, nor do I believe there is, any such law as this quarter-mil...

Well. obviously you've already thought about this "domestic stock" thing, but if not your animals, what ARE they referring to? Cattle could be called commercial stock too. I would interpret it as saying they have no right to try and keep you from water. Wouldn't "domestic" be the...

There are numerous places all up and down LaBarge Canyon and above in Charlebois Canyon where wildlife can get water and in fact prefer to...

The statewide law concerning desert springs and waterholes has to do with hunting restrictions. You cannot hunt within 1/4 mile of a waterhole. Springs, streams and waterholes have no "camping only" restrictions unless it is a special case applied by a specific Government agency for a spec...
