I've been out of town for awhile, and am just catching up on recent posts to the forum. I was interested in checking out the offering on ebay, but couldn't find it using their search tools and typing in Jenkins, Lost Dutchman, or Superstition Mountains. I've never used ebay to purchase anything. Can...

TGH, The common denominator between Monroy's Ranch and Second Water is the "old Government Trail". On page 58 of The Holmes Manuscript the Dutchman is quoted as saying; "My last few trips were made by way of the Salt River, traveling up to Monroy's ranch and taking one of the old Gove...

TGH, From the discussions in the post on Monroy's Ranch, it seems as though there are quite a few trails open as possibilities. I spent two days driving and hicking the area from Canyon Lake to about the Peters Canyon area (without the aid of an old military map), but couldn't find an area that look...

Joe, Thanks for the usual quick and informative reply. I wore my hiking boots a little thin this weekend checking the north end of the supers for clues that might coincide with the other clues and a trail turning south into the mountains. Sore feet convinced me to "let my fingers do the walking...

Does anybody know how far it is possible to travel in an average winter day with a pack mule or two? The distance between the Verde River and Cottonwood creek is about 13 or 14 miles- give or take a couple depending on the route. My question is: Do you think that Waltz camped at Cottonwood Creek bec...

Joe,

Any idea where I could get a copy of that 1873 map?

Joe: Just wondering if you have this forum connected to a pager or something? You always seem to be the quickest on the draw to reply--with good info and tips I might add. Thanks, Sluicebox Aurum: Thanks for that great information, it's just what I wanted to hear. If you can beleive the other story ...

Monroy's Ranch

I just finished reading The Holmes Manuscript. (Part 2 of T. E. Glover's book). Just wondering if someone could tell me where Monroy's ranch is. If the book has the information, I must have missed it. Would you need to look on an older map to find it? I'm wondering if it is the same as "Second ...

Rose Quartz

I just finished reading the Sims Ely book "The Lost Dutchman Mine". I didn't recall that he ever mentioned the dutchmans gold being in rose quartz. I've read this in other books and articles, and it seems to be a widely held belief. Does anyone know when the gold in rose quartz was introdu...

Joe: I think you're probably right, I was very impressed with Greg's references and his great description and knowledge of the area. Certainly another + for joining this forum. I had something on my mind as I read your last post. Not to change the subject, but just wondering if you or your companion...

Gregory: Yes, that is a very accurate description of the area. I just found the large hole on top of the mesa last weekend when I went to collect some of the old cans and stuff. If it was being used as a camp/living quarters in the 50's and 60's, that narrows my search window quite a bit. It also me...

alternate view

dutch elm disease : (that's a mouthfull) I think I'de better wait until I digest the typical view before I get started on the alternate. I'll write it down though, and when I've read the other stuff and think I know it all, I'll treat myself to the alternate view. Thanks for your tip, and your welco...

Willow Spring Creek

Joe: Did you miss my last post to you, or are we looking at different maps? My current topo map names the creek below Hackberry Mesa as "First Water Creek." Storm started out at Canyon Lake because on the OLDER MAP he was using First Water Creek was named "Willow Spring Creek." I...

Books for newbee

Wiz: That was a very assertive and definite answer - the kind that inspires confidence. I like that. I'll purchase these two immediately and get started. Thanks Joe: Your confirmation of the two books recomended by Wiz add to my confidence that I'll be getting off to a good start here. I tried looki...

hike in to hackberry mesa

Joe: I didn't hike in that way myself, but from what i've seen of it, it doesn't look like a difficult hike. It does seem like a long trek for a family picnic though. My first look at the canyon came from parking on 88 and hicking up and over. The view I had from the top made it obvious that it woul...

inaccessable caverns

Hello Grayhair, thanks for the welcome. I'm new to the search for the LDM, but I gotta say I'm convinced. I can't wait to find my first innaccessable cavern. You know, the one that is completely full by now, is the most talked about, flooded at least once, and, I'm not too picky, a golden statue of ...

Storms Mine

Wiz:

Does the Hikers Guide give you any history? I'm wondering if Storm himself went back and started this mine after he wrote (TGG) in 1945, or if someone else worked it and gave it his name because of the Jenkins find reported there in his book? Thanks for the tip, I'll check out your source.

Joe: I just read the Jenkins story on this site. It is interesting how gold stories--like fish stories-- sometimes have bigger nuggets and more intriguing details even when retold by the SAME storyteller. Hard to sort out truth from fiction unless you get the details yourself I guess. But we gotta s...

Jenkins float ore

azdave35: Thanks for the input. By Storms account, the drift ore was from a nearby ledge because " three sides of rock are weather-worn, but fourth side still rough". I'll keep your info in mind as we plan to do some placer inspections downstream where the canyon narrows as it heads for th...

Joe: Thanks for the additional input. I don't know if a claim was filed or not, but I'm sure its no secret as the tailings are clearly visable from the canyon below once your in the right area. (first water creek on my map) You can see these tailings from where a well traveled trail turns East to So...

Jenkins lost load

Joe: Just a note to say thanks for the personal welcome. I was glad to get a reply so soon. I have the 1946 printing of "Thunder Gods Gold", and that was my only source for looking in the area. In the book, Storm provides a photograph and a map. I decided to check the area I thought the ph...

Jenkins' lost load

I jsut joined today (October27,2004) and have a question about the Jenkins gold in Berry Storms book (TGG). I recently visited this area and found the tailings and tunnel at the location I thought the book indicated. I was wondering if anyone here knows who worked this area below Hackberry Mesa and ...
