Re: LDM Documents on the Internet

I have added a couple more packages of Bernice McGee correspondence to the “Lost Dutchman Mine” web site. I passed these on to Greg several months ago, so some of you may have already seen them. They are both related to the Peralta Stone Maps and are located in the “The Bernice McGee Collection” lin...

Re: Missing Hiker In The Superstitions

I am hoping that Tom Kollenborn will put together a story on the 3 hikers from Utah. I could have missed many of the story details but so far I have seen little officially or unofficially. I assume the case is closed? One question someone may be able to help me with is whether a coroner’s inquest wa...

Steve Creager's Passing (5 Years Ago Today)

It was 5 years ago today that we became aware of the passing of Steve Creager. I’m sure many are thinking of Steve, Lynn and the boys. (They’re almost men now). We pray that the family is doing well. Steve, your memory does not grow dimmer, as I frequently think of you and your family and look to yo...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Wayne, I don’t know how much help this is regarding the location ofthe original photo of Kochera you saw but it was published in the Superstition Mountain Journal [Volume 13, Page 19]. The photo was supposedly taken in 1962 when Kochera was about 34 years old. This was from an article entitled Koche...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, If we turned a blind eye toward all the subjects and people that “somebody” felt were full of S#!t, there wouldn’t be much left to research regarding the LDM. :D I do agree that the Kochera story that has been repeated for fact is obviously in error on several counts. I don’t understand everyth...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

The Social Security Death Index for Kochera also sheds light on his activities after leaving the Navy. I say “after leaving the Navy,” since it appears to be very unlikely that John could have shoehorned an occupation in before he joined the service. (We believe he was only 17 or had just turned 18 ...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

I wanted to share some background on John B. Kochera’s military service as it helps us fill in some of his timeline and frame his future activities. There is a database entitled U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca. 1775-2006 on ancestry.com that provides the following information. Name: John B Kochera Serv...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, I need some more help on a Native American question. In the Haywood story, Kochera writes, “In 1960 I met an Apache Indian named Haywood, he was from the Verde river country in Arizona.” What Apache band would this be and where would they have been located? (Reservation?) Would it be likely tha...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Paul, You wrote: “Doesn't John Kochera imply he has Indian heritage in his letter to Crazy Jake?” I will try to answer what I believe is your hidden question. I don’t believe for a minute that you aren’t aware of what Kochera said in his letter to Crazy Jake. :) I believe what you are questioning is...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, Kochera, born on the San Carlos Reservation I don’t believe that was Kraig’s story but simply a story that he took from Zig-Zag Canyon. If you get a chance reread Chapter 27 beginning on page 202. (Kochera 1942) You will see that Kraig's post follows this story very closely. If this was the sto...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

I know I promised everyone in a previous post that I would not bore them with the genealogy of John B. Kochera’s mother, Mabel Boswell. John Kochera’s alleged Indian connection is a hard one to let go of. I’m sure there will always be some level of doubt, for some, no matter how the genealogy is pre...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, Thanks for all of the effort, the history and great pictures. I will try to summarize the Klinekole reference by Richard Peck. We have probably gone as far as we can unless we find a smoking gun of a treasure story involving a Klinekole. I don’t know for sure when the Klinekole surname is first...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

I have no idea why Peck made this notation on the notes he created regarding a phone call with John B. Kochera on November 8, 1995. (See previous post of Peck Telephone Notes Photo) “Klinekole 92 yrs old in 64 Apache Indian in New Mexico” The structure of the note seems to be a response, (from Koche...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Guys, In my previous post, I wrote: : One of these nuggets is the Kochera story. One of the things that I found interesting was Jake’s reference to Kochera’s 16 year old son. This fits the genealogy. Of course the timeframe for the encounter and the resulting letter all fit perfectly. While the time...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

I never thought there was much fuzz on the 625 page Crazy Jake manuscript. I do have a few thoughts that may run contrary to some peoples opinion but that is par for the course. People have hinted that Jake wrote this manuscript while in prison. Since Greg got Jake’s material after the trial and it ...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Paul, I too was curious about the provenance of the introduction of the name “Silas” Haywood. In addition I also wondered about how the Kochera letter to Crazy Jake got out into the Dutchman community and when. The handwritten “copy” (Greg does not have the original letter) we have is from the Richa...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Paul, I too was surprised that Peck had apparently already been in contact with Kochera by 1965. He had also hooked up with the MOEL gang and Erwin Ruth in 1965. Richard only arrived in Arizona in 1964. I suspect Peck may have been one of the money men Kochera was referring to in the 1974 letter to ...

Since you guys have the bit in your teeth I would like to share the first page of some notes that came from Greg's Richard Peck file. Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, Given your apparent take that you put absolutely no stock in assay reports of Dutchman Ore, I do find your previous post puzzling. You wrote; I keep returning to those two letters and the extreme difference in the assay reports. Huge red flag there, and that is probably the key to the whole thi...

Joe, I’ll quit pestering you with questions regarding your theory about where the Kochera ore really came from. Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, I want to be clear upfront that this is certainly not a witch hunt to vilify Kochera. I’m getting ahead of myself here, but my impression is that Kochera is a poster boy for a treasure hunter. It appears to me he was grasping for straws throughout his search. If the Haywood story is true. Koche...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Joe, I guess I had the same reaction as Paul regarding the timeline. My sense was that you were tying the Kochera Ore (1990) to the reopening of the Silver Chief mine (1997-1998). Of course that wouldn’t work. I now believe you are speaking of another incident that occurred earlier that 1990. Your r...

Re: The John B. Kochera Story Revisited

Paul, Thanks for the offer on the research. The week between Christmas and New Years is a tough time to do research. A lot of the places that do remain open have a skeleton staff. Before I made any detail plans, I would make a few phone calls to make sure the place you would like to do your research...
