I agree with you to an extent. However,
some cultures simply didnt write ANYTHING down (Amerindians for example)
and whatever tales we have from them pertaining to the Superstitions, whether they be related to caches, lost mines or battles, are today all second- (in some case third or fouth)...

It is even more important when word of mouth is recorded on paper, and then it is still a job to know what really happened, and in there lays our job , to decipher truth vs. legend. A journalist once said," when legend becomes more interesting than truth , print the legend." Peter, the sta...

Oral vs Written History

Oops.

I am in the middle of doing some source reading on the Apache. I came across the following in I FOUGHT WITH GERONIMO by Jason Betzinez. Betzinez was a youth when his tribal band at San Carlos "volunteered" (actually were forced at gunpoint) to leave San Carlos with renegades...

The only place I've ever seen Pistol labeled on a map is in the "Hiker's Guide".

Are you guys finding a "Pistol Canyon" shown on any official map. I swear I've seen it somewhere before too, but cannot presently find it shown on either the USGS topo or Beartooth maps.

That is correct.
Which is why I dubbed the Gassler Map confused.

Gassler may have known just where Pistol Canyon was, but his maps show three different canyons labeled Pistol in his own hand. One on the Peter's side of the north end of Geronimo Head, one where most put it (not far from Squaw) and one on the Peter's side of Peter's Mesa close to where the modern t...

Ron,
I have heard about the Needle looking like a heart from a distance. But when I found 3 different sources defining the "heart" symbol to mean property or treasure of the King of Spain, I felt that made more sense. Don't use the 20th century translation of the stones because it will...

That was me that made the comment about the weathered stones - don't blame azmula for that one! Of course, you're 100% correct about simply repeating what we've read. Guilty as charged.

Hiker,

When Bill Barkley was close to the end , Jake went and moved him to his trailer, naturally to get any information that he could. Jake had a habit of retrieving the old timers at their end . Another one was Chuck Aylor. I was not there when Bill died , but as I remember , he died sit...

Tex Barkley

Much has been said about the relation of Tex and Gassler on this site, I think to the point of giving alot of credence to what Gassler may of known or found. Maybe we should look into Tex abit better. I did not of course know Tex, but I did know Bill Barkley. I conversed with him quite alot, while h...

Squaw Canyon and Pistol Canyon begin at the same point. Only a saddle and small ridge seperate the heads of these two canyons. I was told once by an old timer that a spring ran out of the northwest side of the Peters Dome and watered a large area at the heads of these two canyons. The area was cover...

The grove of trees questions flits thru LDM lore like a ghostly shadow. It has been variously reported as a "laurel grove", a "laurel thicket", an "ironwood grove",a one armed palo-verde tree (yeah right), a group of trees that reside on a hilltop, ridge, mesa, or "...

Walt absolutely "knew" where Pistol Canyon was. Some folks who are not familiar with Peters Canyon might think those washes west of Peters Canyon can be labeled "canyons" themselves, but that simply isn't so.

As to the whole "Horse Mesa" episode, I think there ...

How do you know that Gassler wasn't correct in labeling what he called Pistol Canyon? In case someone missed something... Gassler's Wash is also sometimes called Old Squaw Canyon or Squaw Box. And, of course, Lost Ridge is "Peters Dome." The circle marked "MINE" on the map must have the diameter of several city blocks. So, it is not really very revealing.
<br...
