George Walker Reference

Helen Corbin included a section of the Matt Cavaness Memoirs in her book, The Bible on the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine and Jabob Waltz. These memoirs cover the period of 1843 to 1929 and the title page to them on page 31 of the book says " The Matt Cavaness Memoirs contain references and informatio...

Obie Stoker Maps

Joe, just sent you the two scanned Obie Stoker maps. One is of the Supers area in general and the other is a more detailed one of the mine location on a mountain. If you can't open them, let me know and I will mail a hard copy. I will offer an apology in that I did not see your earlier posting reque...

Obie's Maps to His Mine

Joe, you are a case at times. I think I have figured out your personality by reading several hundred of your postings for the past several months. Your game appears to be to poke at the Forum players to see if you can bait them into exposing something they might not want to that would be of interest...

Obie Stoker's Mine Map

I have a copy of Obie Stoker's map drawn to his mine in the Boulder Canyon area that was published in the October issue of the Travel Examiner. He was claiming it was the Lost Dutchman's mine and was subsequently covered over by a land slide around 1925. I often wondered about his history and apprec...

Petrsch vs Holmes Version of LDM Mine

Jacob Walts' deathbed telling of finding the LDM to Dick Holmes has always struck me as pure fabrication. On page 51 of T.E. Glover's book, Part 2 The Holmes Manuscript, Brownie Holmes writes the following as what Jacob told Dick about meeting 3 Mexicans in the mountains and killing them to take the...

Question for Thomas Glover - How Many Peralta Battles?

In your book, The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz, you struggle with trying to get the historical timelines to fit with the Peralta massacre - the data leads to the batlle being in the 1840's or the 1860's. Quote from page 79: "It is almost as if there were two fights." One interesting i...

Salt Flats and Mexican Mining

I would suggest at least two reasons why the Mexicans had a camp up on Peters Mesa at the Salt Flats where they worked the ore down one level by breaking it up and then taking it to the nearby arrastra: 1. There probably aren't a lot of places in the Supers close to the main Mexican camp in Marsh Va...

Salt Flats on Peters Mesa

Peter, thanks for the detailed location. I have been up on Peters Mesa but did not explore that immediate area. There is a lot of history in that area. Ben Edwards and Matthew Roberts reportedly found a Mexican "drift" mine that ran along a fault line up on Peters. The also believed that t...

The "Salt Flats" on Peters Mesa

In the late 1800's, the ranchers that kept cattle herds in the Supers would have their cowboys take salt blocks back into the mountains for the cattle. There were several locations where they placed these and I think I read that Tom Kollemborn when he was a teenager working for Tex Barkley used to c...

Read The Stones

For the visually impaired: The stones, although not signed by the author, are dated in numbers 4 inches high as 1847. This date would conincide with some of Tom Glover's estimates of when the Spanish massacre happened (page 57 of The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz Part 1) of between 1842-1848 bas...

The Stone Map Pictures circa 1965

If you can find the small phamplet that Travis Marlowe published in 1965 titled "Superstition Treasures" you can see photographs of the stones made at that time. The knife is clearly seen on those photos as well as the 2, 18, and 7. If the photo on page 337 was taken just after the stones ...

Wm Edwards and the Massacre Site

Helen Corbin's latest book, The Bible on te Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, has taken a lot of bashing on the forum, but it was worth the price for the pioneer diaries it contains. On pages 276 - 283, the Wm Edwaards journal tells the story of him and another army trooper finding the skeletons at the Massa...

More Dutchman Ore Findings

Here is additional finding of Dutchman or Peralta ore in the Superstitions: 5. In 1962 John Kochera and his brother, Joe Jr., found 24 lbs of very rich gold ore in a rotting leather saddlebag under the brush beneath a mesquite tree. The ore was assayed at $48,928/ton with gold at $35/oz. This would ...

Findings of Dutchman Ore in the Superstitions

There have been several dozen cases of individuals finding Dutchman ore (or at least Peralta/Gonzales ore) in the Superstitions in the 1900's that have been recorded. A complete catalogue of the locations of these finds might well paint a picture of the key trails that the Spanish and Mexicans used ...

Bark Notes - Spring Clue

Peter, I should give you more specifics on the spring clue from the Bark Notes I am referring to before you chase the wrong one. On page 131 of the Robert Probert version of the notes, Bark relates the following story: "Then there arrived in camp an old Mexican from who said that he had been in...

Hells Hole Spring - Hell to Get To?

Peter, thanks for the forwarded response. The comment seems to indicate that the spring is hard to get to. Can one stand next to it and dip water out or is it sunken/recessed and one has to use a bucket and rope to get water?

Obviously, am fishing on a clue related to the Bark Notes.

Hells Hole Spring

A short way up Tortilla Creek after Peters Canyon forks off of it, there is a spring on the south side called Hells Hole Spring. I would like to know if anyone has been to that spring and if so, could they please provide a description of it around these questions: 1. Does the spring run all year? 2....

Estee Conaster in her book, The Sterling Legend (1972), wrote on page 74: "Before leaving the subject of saguaros and their connection (if any) to the alleged gold of the Superstitions there is something else that should be pointed out. Considerable emphasis has been placed by some individuals ...

Peralta Letter - The Good News

Another more relevant thought on Peter's posting on the Peralta letter is this: If Emilio (Peralta) Drigo visited the LDM mine in 1907 and his observation was that the "place had been shaken up or flooded some", then this should be considered excellent news for Dutch Hunters. This means th...

Peter, is that all of the "meat" in the Peralta letter or did you have to withhold something? Not asking the divulgence of anything, just wondering if there was some addtional content to the letter relative to the LDM than what you posted.

Why It Wasn't Found in the 1880's

There are probably 3 main reasons I know of as to why the LDM was not found in the pre -1885 and late 1800's by the prospectors of that time: 1. The Apaches were not permanently moved out of the Superstition Mountains area until 1884. Prior to that time, a prospector was taking a death risk to hunt ...

Manuel Peralta - Last Mine Visit

Peter Wrote: The question posed by Wiz and Thirsty about the mine not being found for the past 117 years or so is a valid one. Was the last person to take ore from the mine area Joe Deering in 1885? John Reed in 1888? (if you put any credence in those tales) I do not know, of course. It does amaze t...

Vegatation Over A Pit Mine

The idea of vegatation being over the top of one of the Peralta/Gonzales pit mines is interesting. There are several old timers' stories of a pit mine having trees planted over it to disquise it and stories indicate the Indians placed vegation over it also. In his phamplet, The Lost Peralta - Dutchm...
