Earthquake of May 3, 1887

Peter, That was my original, thought that the mountain photographed doesn't match up with current views, even with the top off. Joe has mentioned a specific angle and elevation he thinks that shot could have been taken from. Again, I ask the old timers if anyone has any pictures showing a side that ...

Earthquake of May 3, 1887

Randy, Your site from the US Geological Survey also talks about a series of earthquakes that shook Arizona in January of 1935. I wonder if this is the time when Miner's Needle lost its top. If an earthquake strong enough to take the top of the mountain off happened in 1935 it would certainly show th...

Miles of Tunnels

Tom Kollenborn mentioned a limestone cavern that he found once in the Supes and didn't want the beauty of it destroyed so he disquised the entrance. It would not suprise me to find there are larger caverns that have not been discovered.

Miner's Needle

Thanks Joe,
I was able to post the pictures of Miner's Needle from several different angles. Still can't see one that matches the Bob Ward Picture. Anybody else have something that comes close?

Armchairhuntress, A good description of Geronimo's travels and pursute can be found in "The Truth About Geronimo" By Britton Davis, a young cavalry officer involved in the campaign to capture Geronimo. If he had access to secret tunnels he certainly didn't use them. You will find a miriad ...

Miners Needle

I have looked through abaout a dozen different shots of Miners Needle from various angles and I can't come up with one that even remotely resembles the Bob Ward photo, even without the top. I tried to post them all to the Member Archive but apparently I am picture impared, will keep trying.

Miners Needle

Armchair, Bob Ward actually included a picture in his book of Miner's needle supposedly taken before 1936 when the top was supposed to have fallen off. I am not sure that's what the picture is. I know I have some recent pictures of Miner's needle at the house, but I don't know if they are taken from...

Randy,
Julia didn't start to sell maps until she realized that she couldn't find the mine herself. By that time she had sold her bakery and was most likely broke. I still think though that she would not try to give very accurate information on the maps, just in case.

Welcome Armchairhuntress, If you have the opportunity, pick up Thomas Glover's book "The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz. It's a great place to start down this crazy road. In it he has an ore analysis of a specimen supposedly taken from under Waltz bed after he died. It was compared to severa...

Randy,
A great source for out of print books is www.addall.com/used/. I have found several Dutchman related books much cheaper than e-bay and they usually have a selection to choose from. Some of them have notes in them from past hunters which makes it interesting. Good luck!

The Rhiney Petrasch Letter

There was a tremendous amount of historical information in Helen's "Bible" from the first hand experiences of the pioneers letters and journals. Even though most of them were not related to the LDM, the insight into the lives of these people was fascinating. We have to take all of the book...

Those dates work for me, and I agree that nothing to structured is a good idea. However, being "in the shadow of the Superstitions" some kind of group outing might be in order.

unanswered questions

To me, two things come to mind. First of all, Adolph Ruth, I don't think there is much question that he had a legitimate map. But did he find something? Glen Magill used one of the Ruth maps and found what appears to be a very similar location to many of the descriptions of the Lost Dutchman, but no...

Bee Swarms

Bushrat, Thanks for the info. what time of year were you there? Planning on spending a few days in the mountains this fall, kinda like to know where these guys are, I am alergic to bee stings. The bumping seems to be a warning. These Africanized colonies send out scouts sometimes a far distance from...

Bee Swarms

We have had several posts on the bees in the last year. Has anyone been chased or "bumped" by them? Are there any areas where you are uncomfortable hiking in because of the bees? Since basically all of the Arizona bee populations have been Africanized, first hand experiences may keep somon...
