Even though it is through the bark notes I became most familiar with the story, it was someone else who related the story of the first trips. Where he got his sources I do not know, but they have proven out well over 30 years later. The first trip or trips were just the 2 alone from what I was told....

I have made 2 trips to the area I was told was Magills LDM site. I did not find the guardhouses or tunnel area there either time. I may have made a mistake or got the wrong information. I really still would like to search for those 2 things and get some pics of the mysterious tunnel area. Also I wan...

The game population wouldn't take a hit in that area as in others due to the lack of population in the general vincinity. And those declines generally were after the turn of the century. The waterholes and springs were probably in much better shape in that time period than today. The Superstition ra...

I have come across 2 different areas worked that had been opened after being filled in the Superstitions. In both cases there was a tunnel located below the pit/prospect area. If you include Magills, that would be 3 similar areas that loosely fit the LDM description. I included a picture of one such...

Novice, According to the manuscript Brownie started looking at around 17 which gives hime a year or 2 in which to meet Chuning. Though the story of the meeting is doubtful as is most of the manuscript. At least it wasn't another dramatic deathbed story. Brownies campfire chat is typical of the "...

With my ears ringing from the Rob Zombie concert the night before I tried Rogers wild goose chase first. Being 100 years or so on a cold trail isn't a lot of fun, but the weather was initially great. Would ne nicer if Chunnings clues or Barks notes fit the scenario better. Maybe its familiarity that...

There are possibilities as the HEAT dig has shown us. Also there is some weight that would favor the fortunehunter if they made the right contacts or looked for the right support. I believe this would favor a local more so than someone out of state. This site alone I believe gives the right person, ...

Joe, I believe the only thing besides the distances I was questioning was Trap Canyon and the location of Javelina canyon. I believe the 2 highest percentage starting points are Charlebois and La Barge Springs. In both cases I doubt the Trap Canyon path. Possibly Music Canyon or the south side of Mu...

To me it always comes down to 2 things. 1) The events of Walts last 24 hours. It plays out like a shakespearean tragedy. Lost sketches and notes, death bed confession and contradictory stories and statements. None of the principles gave us a first hand account. We are interpreting others interpretat...

Theres no better time to think then when everyones asleep and I can sit in the dark and just dwell on nothing and everything. We all try to minimize things to fit, what if Deering is accurate on his mileage and in typical dutch fashion we are trying to move ourselves from the course. I believe a lot...

Was I nitpicking? Probably. I just figure that from point A (Deerings camp) to point B (Burro) how did he make his approach and where did he cut the trail at. This would work better knowing where he actually camped at, but its a start. Before reaching the Burro I am sure. Or maybe not. Did he hear t...

Joe, You should understand my strategy is to stumble along until in a moment of complete ignorance I find it all. Then I will forget where its at so I can survive to write my book. I figure hunting for the LDM is a bit like selling water by the river. I got no clue what everyone else is really looki...

One other thing we should remember is that Deering was heading to the Silver King so he would have naturally traveled North to South. But he would have travelled otherwise in returning to the mine. Waltz seemed to travel from the North to South as well, but when planning to show Julia and Reiney the...

Thanks for the info. I was already planning on going up the Ely-Anderson trail, So I figured might as well have some sort of purpose besides just a hundredth trip just for fun. I have been thinking about going back to the Weaver mountains next fall and rotating my hunts back and forth. So the last c...

Joe, If Bark and Ely hid anything and knew the general vincinity of Javelina canyon and horse country and your interpretation is correct, why did they spend so much time on Bluff Springs? They seem to believe that the LDM and Deerings mine are one and the same. Deering found Ore at the tunnel and no...

This is supposing that Deering was camped where you want him and followed the burro the direction you want. Deering never gives much of a locale. Its Chunning and Bark that seem to direct things in one direction or another. Chunning waited 4 or 5 years according to Bark to even begin to look for the...

I would agree with Joe in a handgun is sufficient for a trip. The more you display and how you conduct yourself merits the attention you receive. Theres nothing worse than creating paranoia or unwanted interest when you are off by yourself in the middle of nowhere. Chances are whoever takes an inter...

I know quite a bit of the actual records and memorabilia concerning the site that were on hand were destroyed in the fire. The guy who took care of everything first hand lived on the site until he was bounced out. He could be a good source for anyone in Payson if he is still around. Last I heard he ...

I saw the cabin before and after the dude fire years ago. All that remained afterwards was a water pump, that had not worked for years until after the fire. They shut down the site after investors purchased the area and began developing around it. That was a shame since it had some historical value ...

I think the thing overlooked or perhaps remains unspoken is that Waltz resided in the same general area as a number of Peraltas during his time in Arizona. The story may have been about a Peralta from Mexico who ran into trouble in central Arizona. I believe the Peralta story in the Holmes camp came...

Occasionally there is an individual singled out and in most instances the offending party or parties are to...

Had a conversation at the park with a visiting German this morning. His English was thin, but after a while I asked about Spitzfelsen. He said it would be a sharp pointed mountain peak. He drew a picture and pointed to the White Tanks as to make his point. He was in his seventies and from East Germa...
