Gonzales Letter

Letter written to Gerald Hamrick from Señor Gonzales. I have previously referred to Gerald (Jerry) Hamrick. For those who may not known of Jerry the follow thumbnail is proffered. Jerry was a Dutch Hunter. He tracked down the Gonzales family of in Mexico. He visited with them. He followed that conta...

Re: Rendezvous and Ely's Book

Don, Pardon the late reply. A verity of techie issues, and life have delayed me getting back to you. You wrote: “… be that as it may, my opinion of barnards book/pamphlet is that it was full of half truths-quarter truths and downright lies, same as Elys book was.. so ,again in my opinion it matters ...

Rendezvous and Ely's Book

We all know the Dutchman has a great deal of misinformation associated with it. At the 2019 Rendezvous I gave a talk about Sims Ely’s book. Allow me a bit of review from that talk. After multiple rejections by New York publishers Ely’s submitted his manuscript to William Morrow and Co. who passed th...

Gold-Tellerum Ore (AuTe)

Part 1: When we (Clay and I) had some of the ore examined at the University of Nevada, School of Mines (I think that was their formal designation) we had a few items/gold ore left to Dick Holmes by Waltz — "jewelry". One was what is commonly called “The Match Box” (more correctly Match Saf...

Re: Another Dutch Hunter Crosses Over

Once again I am where I do not want to be. Writing about the loss of a respected colleague, and good friend, Joe Ribaudo . Joe was a most valued and respected member of our community. To me he was a good friend – not a phrase I use lightly. He was honest to the bone. As many know from the forums, he...

Re: Hamrick Collection

Deducer, The account of the Hamrick Collection is a tangled one. The collection is is in a private collection, which, one might say is a good thing. As at one time Jerry wanted to destroy the collection. The original collection consisted of primary documents and notes. The notes are not organized, a...

Re: Hamrick Collection

When Hamrick returned from Mexico he wrote a letter to Erwin Ruth. It appears Hamrick had been writing Erwin off and on prior to the excerpts below. “Dear Mrs. Stella Hawkins May 14, 1988 I wrote a letter to your Brother in 1970 — after I came from Mexico — spending 5 years there. My letter was answ...

Re: Hamrick Collection

Thank you. I am still going through the collection. Presently I have not determined if copies of the original maps are in the correction.

Some of the collection was inadvertently destroyed some years ago. If I come across any I'll contact you.

Hamrick Collection

From the Hamrick Collection: Going through Collection I have come across letters written by Gerald “Jerry” Hamrick. One would expect Jerry’s files to have letters sent to him (which they have), but unlikely to have letters sent to others. The reason is Jerry’s letters are hand written. Hence no carb...

Re: Another Dutch Hunter Crosses Over

Tom Burnett. As some may know, my first introduction to the Superstitions was a trip with Tom Burnett and Len Killen. That one trip turned into two life long friend ships. As I posted a while back I lost Len a few years ago. Tom and I would visit by phone every month to every few months. Tom lived ...

Re: Rendezvous

Addendum: I have rechecked Bicknell’s 1895 article, “One of Arizona’s El Dorados” (San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 13, 1895). I still find no reference to a massacre. However, I did find a very interesting paragraph. It is the seventh paragraph and, reads: “During the past year all the old stories hav...

Re: Rendezvous

Zentell, I agree. One of the facets of the legend is the massacre story and Mexican mining culminating in Silverlock and Malm. I am not saying such a thing didn’t happen. It seems fairly certain that something similar likely happened. The massacre story has become a staple of the legend. Yet, there ...

Memorial Day - Freedom Isn't Free

To All WHo Have Served This Memorial Day I am remembering my father and a conversation I had with Tom K. My dad was a fireman in San Bernardino, California on December 7, 1941. After the attack on Pearl Harbor there was fear of a Japanese attack on California. Men who were firemen on Dec. 7th were e...

Mike, Good to see you posting. Would have responded sooner, but life got in the way. I don't know if you caught this earlier post. So thought I'd repost some of it. Concerning Silverlock and Malm: - Did the Mexicans mine between the Gila and Salt Rivers? Again I believe the weight of the evidence is...

A Joke or Two

Want to brighten up someone's day with innocent fun? When you go into a Papa Murphy’s pizza as you pick up your order they will ask you : Do you have any questions? (temperature, timing, etc.) Say, Yes. I do have a question. As they stop to answer you say: You know the Big Bang, created energy and o...

Re: Another Dutch Hunter Crosses Over

Gerald “Jerry” Hamrick (1927-2019) My guess is only a few old timers know about Gerald “Jerry” Hamrick. He has been a colleague and friend of mine for at least 25 years. My greatest regret is that I had not seen him in many weeks. I had been going by the nursing home at least once a week for a few y...

Re: how did YOU first develop an interest?

I think I may have already have addressed this issue in a book. But it bears readdressing. Many years ago I came across Sims Ely's book and it interested me. I was in high school, and it only interested me academically. Years later while in California and Carol, my wife was still in England, I ment ...

Don, Thanks for the PM. It is good to see you posting. I appreciate your posts and I appreciate this forum as it tries to avoid what I can only kindly describe as flights of fancy approaching irrationality I encountered over on TNet. We do not all have to agree -- and it would be boring if we did. P...

Re: Massacure

Research is an interesting thing. Getting it right is not just a matter of data, but of time and place too. I remember back many years ago there was what were called “Cat Conferences” in Seattle. The conferences targeted non-domestic cats, i.e., non-domestic felidae. At any given conference there mi...

I wouldn’t be too hard on Helen. She relied on what she thought was reliable material from a person she and Bob trusted. Material said to come directly from pioneer families. At the time she wrote the book Helen was not the only person who accepted the information and its source. My understanding is...

Gentlemen, IMHO a very good discussion. Thought I ,might throw in my 2 cents worth. - Did Waltz have gold and have it in quantity? I believe that the weight of the evidence is he did. That evidence is Julia’s turn around when she had no collateral. Holmes’ sudden improvement in life stile and the le...

Jim, Thank you. I was going through – skimming actually – Bick’s 1895 article on Waltz and the mine. I did not find a reference to the massacre story. It puzzled me. As I say I was skimming. When I get some spare time I’ll try and go a little deeper. But, I wonder if the massacre Bick refers to of t...

Gentlemen, This question may well have been addressed before. What is the first/earliest mention of the massacre? And who was the person who first disclosed it? Was it Bicknell? Bark? Or was it the Howlands? Or ... I would dig through my files, but these days other things preclude me researching ver...

Re: Rendezvous

I cannot say. That has always been a question. But I have questions. Bark wrote a small document that contained what he considered his best info. It was passed to the Ely family, and I inherited it -- so to speak. I am greatly underwhelmed by its contents. There are things the Spangler famly looked ...
