Re: how did YOU first develop an interest?

if all the nonsense that was once believed ,but now known to be lies added to make the story seem more exciting, had never been included ,and the legend had been reduced to the "bare bones"of what we "know" to be probabley true.....would any of us have been the least bit interested?...i can only spe...

its about the only thing that government (s) excel at ...keeping records. And to a large degree we can trust them,if and when they are made public. unfortunately, when it comes to family anecdotes etc the same thing cant be said ,at least to the same degree. "Waltz's jewellery " etc is one such tidbit...

Re: Massacure

Potbelly Jim, i guess id just have to say i cant agree with the opinion that blame should be witheld from H.C regarding the innacuracies in her book .After all she was the author and plainly didnt check the facts she was given ,we arent talking about a little slip such as being a couple of years out...

Re: Massacure

Hi Thomas, indeed we all make mistakes, and my criticism of her book wasnt soley aimed at her questionable statements presented as facts. maybe im making a mountain out of a mole hill over her "indians never lied" passage, but from that statement alone it seemed pretty plain to me that the book was ai...

Re: Massacure

practically the only thing i recall from helens corbin's book is her rather odd statement that "apache indians NEVER ever lied"..im afraid that did it for me ,i tossed the book in the garbage 10 seconds later, and for all i know (or care) it might remain there still. in my opinion her book is on a p...

Re: Massacure

Potbelly jim hi as regards the "some" i refferred to...it wasnt aimed at you...it was a discussion here some years ago where the suggestion was made that there may well have been at least 2 and possibly 3 or more "peralta massacres".it was put forward as a possible answer ,or solution, to certain de...

Thomas "His having the gold, however, does not dictate its source." indeed! thats it in a nutshell...the dutchmans gold mine is but 1 possible explanation for the issues re thomas /holmes you mention..its conjecture that is all...saying it is evidence that the LDM probabley existed /still exists is ...

Re: Massacure

maybe julia's "gold mine" was money derived from ticket sales to view waltz's corpse ,or income from the sales of phoney maps and cryptic clues?...im only partly serious ,but thinking it over ,that might be nearer the truth. be interesting to see,if available, Julia thomas's tax returns for that per...

Potbelly Jim Hi...sorry you thought of it as "bait",though i understand why it might appear to be that..Id love to be proved wrong..The Ldm legend is something i grew up with.and of course the now disproved and doubtful facts were a large part of why i believed the tale...the "sudden pay of of julia...

Re: Massacure

so it seems the whole fabric is becoming unglued....doubts about the massacre are at last arising...which in turn casts doubt on the silverlock and goldlock story, the peralta mine party and a few other bits and pieces. add those to the doc thorne tale ,the ludicrous stone maps issue, the equally bana...

even WITHOUT knowing all the answers, there are some things that are obviously stupid, and some things that are outright lies designed to bolster someones reputation. theres been lots of that kind of thing here in the past, and when the nonsense was questioned-the trouble started..and went on and on a...

I think theres little doubt who was the most influential person as regards creating interest in the LDM-Barry Storm, even though his books were badly written and full of very questionable "facts". And rumour has it of course that some of those "facts" he created himself ...i.e the Oro carvings and th...
