Re: RIP Bill Fincham

Hello Joe, Thanks for posting the photograph for all to see and remember. Bill was a true gentleman. Additionally, we all are indebted to him for bringing Baker to the rendezvous. I'm anxious to see everyone I October....in fact I'll consider it a privilege....as I just had prostate cancer surgery a...

RIP Bill Fincham

Today Baker Looney informed me that Bill Fincham passed away in March. My condolences to his son Heath. All Dutch Hunters will miss his presence at future campouts.

I don't like to stick my nose into the business of other people...especially in the midst of a pissing contest but...it was my hiking friend Dick W. who packed the refrigerator into the mountains (specifically the Paint mine). Dick, by the way is a great guy and a REAL Dutch Hunter. I might add that...

Joe, I am currently in Alaska suffering along with my building project. This idea of becoming a snowbird has not worked out but I can assure you that I will spend my future winters in Arizona. Despite being grumpy about the weather, I am otherwise doing OK. I don't feel I can post the "Stone Fa...

Hello Joe and Randy,

Maybe someone will post the photo of the stone face that looks up at the mine......this might excite a few people.

For the sake of conversation (and because I am at my kids' apartment in Tempe bored out of my mind waiting to attend a wedding in Gold Canyon tonight): I used to carry a 1960's vintage S&W Model 36...and what a nice little gun. Then after a few negative experiences I carried a S&W Model 27 w...

Randy, Joe is correct. I camped with a good friend in that north Bluff Springs area back in the early 1980's; during the night we heard footsteps near our tent on a dark spring night. (Early in the day we heard someone chipping rock above the ravine). I laid there with S&W in hand. Next morning ...

Randy: The walls were 3 to 4 feet high if I remember right. You cannot see them from the canyons below. Sounds like you were up there at the top of the northern bearing ravine. You would have to be up walking the side ridges to see the walls. I don't think they were the same thing Magill was referri...

In the early 1980's I stumbled upon two horseshoe shaped rock walls ....one located on the northeast ridge and one located on the northwest ridge of Bluff springs. They were well protected and looked like a breastworks (of sorts). I sent photos to Tom Kollenborn at the SMHS. (I did not know anyone i...

Hi Joe,

I did buy the video some years ago and it is sure worth having. My comment was related to the DVD version...but on second thought...the video tapes wear out faster than the DVD's. Probably should have both!

Joe, Your last post was right on target and reminded me that when trust becomes an issue one must also look into the mirror. And your statement that friendship is related to the passage of time is particularly accurate. We are all subject to the human condition (especially Dutch Hunters) and best re...

Very good post. But what does 'trust' encompass? I think 'trust' is more than keeping a secret. 'Trust' is establishing a relationship and never abusing it. It is a mutual agreement between two parties to treat each other with respect especially during disagreement. It is a sharing arrangement with ...

Scoots,

Thanks again. I hit the Ebay link you refereneced and it shows a DVD. Was just wondering (hoping?) that the DVD was a little better quality.

I guess my VHS is good enough....anything related to the.LDM is enjoyable.

I don't know too much about the Stone Maps (only what I have read) but I did look at them at the Mesa Museum many years ago and they were beautifully displayed and impressive. In contrast, I attended the mineral show the year before last and the tablets were in a locked glass display case and could ...

Joe, Yes it was a lucky day indeed. We met Mrs. Martin and she is a remarkable person also. When we showed up late to the house she said she just knew Bill was out there talking to someone. I did (kind of) suggest that the Reavis rifle should be in the Superstition Mountain Historical Society Museum...

Bill Martin

Yesterday my wife and I departed on a trip to Dripping Spring. It was really too late in the day to start (11:30a) when we arrived at the JF Ranch. A truck was parked at the ranch house and we felt the best protocol was to say hello to the man tending his cattle. He was 81 year old Billy Martin Jr. ...

Joe, I agree, the Massacre area would make a perfect group hike although the Forest Service 15 person limit may apply in some areas. But will they challenge a large group of Dutch Hunters and risk a second massacre site?. (For the record, I say this in jest). This may also be a good time to ask perm...

Mr. Roberts,

Thanks for the excellent post. Just so you know, you are held in high esteem around the Superstition Mountain Historical Society Museum and among the "Dutch Hunter" community.

I will soon take another walk to the Massacre Grounds but to the area you describe.

Thanks again.

I think the Massacre Grounds hold promise. A former hiking partner told me that while hiking the "Grounds" with a friend a couple of years ago the friend found a piece of quartz flecked with gold. I did not receive elaborate information about this find but my friend is reliable and compete...

Hi Joe, I somehow missed your earlier reply. I have a bad habit of skimming through things...should have read all the posts more thoroughly. As far as honeycomb goes, I was camped on a ridge in the Bluff Spring area a couple of weeks ago and woke up to the sweet sound of a flute. It was an Indian me...
