Rocha, Just thinking out loud here, but "Civil War" maps of those areas might be hard to come by as neither the Union nor Confederate forces had much of a presence in the area from 1861-1865. In fact the entire Territory of Arizona was pretty much vacated by Anglos except for military colu...

Bandit,

You might want to take a look at Tom Glover's 1st book. He does an analysis of the Ortiz Map and accompanying letter on page 327-329.
Makes some sense to me.

Rocha, Nope, defintely not a "Spanish" map. Just a real simple map that you or I might make. Wont lead anyone to a spot to put a pick in the ground, just gives a general outline of an area. I believe one of the main reasons that the LDM has not been found is that the information given by &...

Rocha, Both Rosecrans and Wilburn wrote manuscripts relating to their theories about the Goldfield area being the location of the LDM. Rosecrans manuscript is called SPANISH GOLD AND THE LOST DUTCHMAN. Wilburns is called the DUTCHMANS LOST LEDGE OF GOLD. Both are available from the SMHS. Wilburn's t...

>>What if Waltz never even met a Peralta?<< This would not surprise me in the least. I have always felt that if the Holmes account is true and Waltz happened upon Mexicans working the LDM, then these Mexicans were likely either peons or miners who knew about the mine (and had worked it in the past) ...

Aurum and Tom, To expand on the questions some: Just what sent Waltz into the Superstitions? Was it meeting up with some Peralta family members or hearing rumor of their activity during the Peeples expedition? Was it hearing about the Green /Edwards discoverys? Or did he simply just bump into some o...

Do you really believe that the "do-gooders" will

a) Fund your "clean-up" of a shaft

and then

b) allow you to keep whatever you find

hound dog, It is my understanding that Jake used several camps on Peters Mesa, ranging from an area near the hairpin turn on the Charleyboy trail and then heading NNW towards the southern end of Malapais Mtn and the head of Squaw Canyon. The area is fairly remote, but can be reached from any of the ...

There is a scene in the film BLACK ROBE (which concerns French Jesuits attempting to convert the Hurons of the Great Lakes in the early 1700s) in which the Jesuit priest hero of the film flagellates himself with some tree branches after having succumbed to his human side after getting himself all wo...

Bill711, What the Penetentes do is real enough, my remark was aimed at historical accuracy. The Romans attached little pieces of lead to the ends of their scouring whips ...called the flagellum in Latin. I was just wondering why the modern day Penetentes did not go for the historical accuracy...and ...

Tom, Actually, the Jacobs manuscript (and I am assuming here that you mean his FIRST manuscript which was relatively coherent and not the 800 page rambling tome he penned in prison) did not just use the Stone Maps to get him up to Squaw and Malapais. Jake took just about every map, clue and story he...
